Do quite a few Brightons residents think they are better than anyone else?

Is Brighton becoming a self centred place?

Despite living in Worthing and coming from Kent, I love being part of Brighton every time I go shopping, or socialising in the city. What I don't enjoy is the massive amounts of pseudo "cool" kids that are at uni there, all trying to be achingly "hip" and "individual", yet achieving precisely the opposite!! Visiting Brighton sometimes reminds me a little too much of Nathan Barley (if anyone watched that!!). If you have seen that show then you will know exactly what I mean!!!!

But in terms of the quality of the restaurants, pubs, and places to go, not to mention the sheer beauty of the city and surrounding area, we are monumentally lucky to live in this part of the world.

Being a Brightonian comes with a certain level of pretentiousness.
We're London by the sea,
A football team that's beaten death, now on the way right up,
gay capital but not emasculated,
Social media capital of europe,
loads the cool things happen here all the time...
So, often people dive right up their own arses, mainly out of pride in their home town facing mockery over the gay thing, where they fight back by making comparisons and have infinite reasons why Brighton is better.
Ignoring the giant drug problems etc. and the fact that everyone's just after more money and rarely cares ego they step on to get it etc.etc but how if that different fun anywhere else in England?

Personally, I like Brighton, I've lived here since i was 3, so I've been here as long as i can remember, I've moved away more than once but i keep coming back.

Lived in Brighton for 5 years, enjoyed it, wouldn't live there again. London has so much more going for it. Brighton's a nice seaside town, probably one of the nicest in the country (yes I know it's a city).

i'd be absolutely amazed if london DIDN'T have "much more going for it"

London: 8,174,100
Brighton & Hove: 256,000

pound for pound nowhere in the UK can even begin to compare with brighton....look at the other UK towns in the population bracket of, say, 240-260k and you soon realise how much of an overachiever brighton & hove really is

Not really. To me It feels like alot of Brighton has become a hub for a lot of Snobbish Self centred people. BUT don't get me wrong. I know a few decent people from there too.

I disagree. I love going 'home' to Brighton and always find it chilled out and friendly and I desperately want to move back. Brighton is just fuckin great and I dont think theres anything wrong in thinking that.

To me youve just described Winchester where I work. Lots of ignorant morons who are all very pleased with themselves living in an over rated mid Hampshire hole.

Maybe. We are all entitled to our own opinions :)

Yeah I'm not saying it's not a nice place, I loved my 5 years living there. But all this 'best city in the country' stuff is nonsense. I guess it depends what you judge a city on, for me it would be things to do, restaurants, bars, tourist attractions, sports, job opportunities etc. And there is nowhere in the UK that comes anywhere near London for that.

If you're judging it on where you would rather live, well then that's down to personal preference, and what stage of your life you're at. I wouldn't bring kids up in London, for example.

But I wouldn't move back to Brighton now because I can't see the point in moving from a brilliant city to a good one, when I move out of London it will be to the countryside, probably not too far from Brighton.

Brighton is a great city. Shame it gets ruined in the Summer by all the chav Londoners and Northerners descending on it.

Well here goes. My question stems from mostly the comments I have seen on the Argus Website and yesterdays trip Into Brighton. I have noticed quite a few so called Brightonians though seem to have a silver spoon In their mouths. Kinda like a holier than thou attitude. Mostly trying to sound like they are better than everyone else. The upper class mentality. Is It just me being paranoid or Is this really the case?

NOTE. I am not fishing.

most true Brightonians don't actually live there any longer

it is a better place than most otherwise why would there be so many trying to live there
the humour is really better than most as well very dry but very funny

Christ, for smugness, people from my hometown, Bournemouth take some beating..But Brighton and Bmth are desireable places to live, so it happens. I think there was a survey of young mothers a few years back of where they would like to bring up kids and we came 1st and 2nd.

Trouble is, you need to drag some folk out of places like Bmth to see some of the rest of the country and appreciate it - even some Bmth fans like Leeds now!

Im in Leighton Buzzard as I work in London. Miss the beach, but at least we get some snow!!

I took my gf to Brighton last year...She loved it...hated London, but loved Brighton... said she felt good about the place from the moment we left Brighton station walking down to the seafront.

Brighton is a great place but one negative side is the seriously over-hyped art scene. We dont have one single decent gallery and the Festival is filled out with heaps of rubbish and the appalling open house which is full of wannabee artists showing photos of the pier. For all it's alleged culture it should and could do a lot better.
