I liked living in Brighton when I did and (even though it has its weaker points, such as half of the city reeking of fast food) I'd still rather live there than in Worthing, where I live presently. never really noticed much snobbery but maybe I didn't live in a relevant area (Seven Dials).
I'd like to live in Bath though - that place looks nice

Funny you should say that. A few people have said Bristol which is fairly close.

I don't think it's self-centred to be proud of the place. There can't be many places with such a large culture of so many people liberated from the mindset of the provincial construct. Rather than being boastful of such things I wish I could visit more places like here.

Hippies were mostly American and died out and in the late 60's early 70's and are now in positions of influence mostly in the US, they don't sit around in Brighton parks being vegans
In fact i doubt they even bother with Brighton.

i think most of the town just gets on with it to be honest. your burchills, fanshaws, polly samsons etc are great for whipping up a bit of deluded self importance but they are not representative of most people, they just keep drip feeding the message back up to N1 which keeps the whole thing ticking over.
brighton has been marketed brilliantly over the last couple of decades, its just that that message has been mainly aimed to total c unts.

I THINK THEY HAVE A CHIP ON THE SHOULDER BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIVE IN HOVE ACTUALLY 
I was born and grew up in Hove and spent the first 26 years there, until I went to polytechnic in London. I have spent the last 28 years here in Tottenham. I don't wish to generalise and most people in Brighton were fine, but I never really felt I fitted in there, particularly the last few years when I was unemployed and studying to get into college as a mature student. I felt people often looked down on me cos i couldn't afford flashy clothes etc. Obviously being unemployed may have made me lack in confidence and feel self conscious.
I came to london, and rather than feel i didnt fit in, I felt like i fitted right in. being at college everyone around me was broke and living in Tottenham so were much of the local community. Rather than judging others people in london have seen too much and are too busy making there own mental space to judge. As a result when I finished college, I just stayed.
A friend of mine here, decided to move to Brighton about 10 years ago. When he asked me what i thought I told him he'd be back in 2 years. When he asked why, I told him about why i stayed and wouldn't go back. He moved and 2 years later he moved back.
I dont know what it is about Brighton. It really is a beautiful town with a lively and vibrant feel to it. It is just the sort of place to bring up kids, certainly much better than London. Most people there are fine. My family still live there and obviously I love them, but every time I go down, I'm glad when I get back to london. A nice place to visit, but I cant live there.

Never really noticed self-centred people til the new Sainburys opened at the bottom of Preston Drove. Who ARE these people? Never ever saw them coming out in droves to support any of the other local shops and businesses, apart from maybe the Park View where their food orders make it impossible to order a simple drink off the single service-dodger bar person in there.

Gave London a go for 3.5 years in total. Back in Brighton for the time being. Not sure I would do it again, although a great deal of my friends live up there.
Depends where the work is when/if I become a qualified teacher this time next year.
Found it to be hectic, but friendly. Amazing what one can achieve by being polite and muster up a smile.

Lived in London for 16-17 years and thoroughly enjoyed it. I do have a 'been-there-done-that' feeling towards the city now though. To be honest I'm feeling the same way about Brighton now. Maybe a change is needed.

I grew up in Brighton, I f***ed off and have no plans to re-visit. Other than the 1 mile radius surrounding Falmer Station.
