Brighton factually.....
I love researching the ancestry
I can only search one side my dads, because my mother was adopted and left when i was very young and have had no contact with her.

I knew my gran was born in Calcutta and lived and married in Rangoon and that her and all her family changed their family surname in 1916 from Schnaubur to Shaw when they were in India. I had to do some digging but found out my 3rd great grandfather came over from Bad Sobernheim, Germany in 1852 as a baker and changed to a publican and had 7 kids, 5 boys who then ran pubs around Islington, Camden, Soho (including the blue post) they were all freemasons.
Amazing to think when I lived in Camden and Islington I walked past the buildings and went into the Blue Post not knowing this.
Also how hard must have they have been to keep folk in check back then.
I think being Freemasons helped them during the first world war, helped them change their name and not be rounded up like many Germans that came, they were also wealthy so that helped I guess.
My Great grandfather went to Burma initially to run a brewery and then the forestry commission out there and later he and his son (my grans brother) fought in Burma. I traced that side of the family all around Germany, Baltic, Austria etc.
My grandads side was interesting too going back to 1066 coming over with William and being awarded land in Devon (Berry Pomeroy) also going back to Bornholm in the Baltic sea and some dude called Harold 111 of Bornholm Bjornsson.

No wonder when we did a DNA test for your ethnicity my wife (American) had 40% British, 45 Scandinavian and other bits.
Me I was 10% British 50% German and 30% Scandinavian and a bits and bobs (including Asian, which probably ties in with a British solider relative marrying a mixed race girl back in 1760 something)

I have such admiration for some of them and sadness to see so many children died so young and a part of the family that stayed in Germany and two were killed in Hadamar killing centre by the Nazis although not Jewish, but because it looks like they had mental or physical disabilities.

Had to laugh that Will Young descends from royalty. If the average generation is 20 years and his grandfather was king 700 years ago, then he has roughly 135,000,000,000 mums and dads over that time. So we're all related to all the kings and Jesus and Genghis Khan and Mitoma. So it's all a question of following one strand on these shows. It does make racism rather farcical though.

My grandfather was the illegitimate son of a count/earl (from the House of Savoy and one of his chambermaids. So it should be easy to work my family back on that side. Count Lippi his name was.

Discovered I'm Irish and North European Jewish. Time to start celebrating St Patrick's day and Hannukah from now on.
Very similar although Swiss German French on my fathers side which I traced down to Stuttgart (never met him) and my Mothers side is from Dublin (never met her).
Most people alive today probably have some kind of jewish links as it seems very common.

My kids already have Polish Jewish, Irish, Jamaican, Panamanian (Jewish origins) Dutch Jewish, West Country orphan, Bulgarian, Cypriot, Anatolian Turkish and English since 1900.
I managed to trace my Mum's paternal line back to 1460 in Buckinghamshire and there was a lot of Johns, George's and Williams, some Mary's and a couple of Zilpas. There was even a Godwin married into the family, so in amongst the billions I am descended from the house of the last Saxon kings of England - aren't we all. And on top of that they have a surname of Norman descent.

Mid Sussex
Using ancestry and DNA testing my father’s side came to mid Sussex in mid 1800’s from the Isle of Wight. Still the hot spot for my father’s side of the family and they dwell in a rough estate in Newport. My brother whilst in IoW drove around it and said you could tell the posh houses as they had 4x4 on bricks in the front garden. Rough as f*** apparently. 25% of my DNA is ‘Viking’ and the rest is Anglo Saxon. The Viking is originally from Denmark which makes sense as my father’s side of the family came over with William the conqueror on his extended vacation. Williams grandfather was a Viking.
Because my grand father was an utter ****, I have four half uncles of which two are younger than me. They live in the other hotspot which is Brizzle.

My mother, who was Spanish, has maternal DNA group that is found in small numbers all over the shop. The highest concentrations are in Slovenia, Hungary, Balkans, Basque region (not Spain) and the Levant to name a few. She was orphaned and brought up be relatives so I have very little other than the DNA .

One of my main hobbies is researching my family tree, I've been doing this for about 20 years. I have found untold stories of wealth, poverty, sadness, suicides and much more. What does it matter? Not a jot in the scheme of things but it reminds me that I'm just a small part of a bigger picture, English, French, German etc. In the scheme of things we are connected people. Idiots like nationalist Farage of French Huguenot ancestry might act differently if they had looked

Btw, I'm heavily invested in researching Spitalfields & Whitechapel, Bethnal Green etc in the late 1700s. The cultural melange is probably unmatched anywhere in the world. PM for more details, I'm happy to share
