Im moving into my new gaff soon, and as well as getting a spanking plasma screen telly (hopefully) im finally going to upgrade from 4 channels of mediocrity to a cable / sky package!

As this is all new to me, can anyone let me know a particularly good deal they've seen, or some hints and tips (eg. are NTL rubbish?).

I dont really want a full monty package (oo-er) but may be tempted by the sports channels (natch).

All help gratefully received...

NTL are doing a 3 package deal - phone/broadband/cable for 30 notes - my Mum took it up last month. You will have to pay extra for the SKY Sports channels though.

NTL Package - £30

You'll have to check that you can get cable in your area first.

We just got the 3 for £30 deal with NTL. It's good but NTL are worse than useless. In the first week the engineer was called out 3 times for different problems including giving us someone else's phone number. Cheap and chearful. Once you get past the initial problems that you WILL get (everyone I know did) it's a decent deal.

Used to have NTL until they started jerking around with the packages. They took the most popular channels, and spread them around the packages, so if you want decent channels, you subscribe to all packages. We took it out and went Sky, which has been great. Telephone via BT/Euphony, about to change to BT/OneTel.

In my computer
we pay £40 a month for Sky digital - sometimes we lose service and we have to have it plugged into the telephone line all the time but we get 100 odd channels - all the sport etc, not that we watch it all, seems like loads of dosh to me but the set up costs of moving to someone else are proclusive...

It's true - you can't get anything from NTL without at least having some teething problems at the start. I've just started getting AOL Broadband via an NTL connection. Engineers out intially to plumb in, and back the following week to snort it when I stopped getting a signal to my modem.

Then I got an invioce from NTL for a TV box I don't have, and learned that they were trying to pump TV channels through my Broadband cable. During the course of last week, I got to know most of their call centre staff quite intimately. I only regret that they are in some far-flung corner of Asia, as during my numerous complaints, I feel I forged some deep and meaningful relationships with many of them, but I realise long-distance relationships rarely work out, so left it at that.

Napeema - if you're reading this, I'm sorry. Even though you are f***ing useless at your job, I enjoyed our bewildering, exhasperating and ultimately pointless half-hour conversations, but I really can't see us taking things any further.

I find ntl cable to be the most laggy shit ever, like locking up on a channel when im flicking :/ but there bb is very good. When i move out im going to get sky as iv had it before i found it much better.
Thats my 2p anyway.

ntl were a bucket of wank when I used them for broadband.

And as well as all the stories on here I know countless other people who've had problems dealing with them.

They do seem incredibly good at cocking things up.

If there are no other cable providers in your area then much as I hate to say it, you're probably better off lining Murdoch's pockets
