Here is my review for what its worth. I have picked up a few negative comments on here and IMDB has received lots of very harsh reviews. It is still averaging a decent 7.3 from 10 after over 50000 votes and Rotten Tomatoes has it at 78% fresh. It is a curious thing in that there is a campaign on imdb to ruin the film from supposed fans. It is normally the critics that decide and often suceed in destroying a film before it has even got out of the starting stalls but the critical reviews were generally pretty good. Mail, Express, Times, NOTW, Sun all gave 4 stars. The braodsheets were not so generous but still found a lot to like in the film.

I remember The Temple of Doom got pretty negative critical reviews giving 2 stars on average when it come out in 1984 but the fans liked it and time has seen the critics grow to hold the film with some affection.

I saw the film on the very first showing at 12.05 am 22/5/08. I did say to Nibble that I was looking forward to the film very much but feared it could never live up to the weight of expectation and I think I was right. I thought it was the weakest of the 4 films but having said that still very much enjoyed it and thought it was a film for a 2 hours summer escapism with some pretty decent action scenes.

It started off very well although the thing I noticed most about the aging Indiana was not his pyschique but his voice. He sounds like an old man now and this took some getting used to. He has lost his sparkle of youth but thats to be expected and he is in great nick for 65. The scene in the Warehouse and rocket launcher was great. The CGI groundhogs were a little bizarre but did not really bother me. the much discussed nuclear explosion and fridge scene was pretty well done, ok, totally unbelievable but then Indiana Jones was always invincible wasn't he like jumping hundreds of feet from a plane with 3 people and an inflatable raft and surviving that and a 200 foot fall from a cliff into some rapids. I think the fridge was a Spielberg nod to Indiana's invincibilty but some people thought it was over the top, fair enough.

The introduction of Mutt and the bike chase was great fun and I thought Shia Labeouff did a decent performamnce but if he became Indiana Jones it just would not be the same. The middle bit sagged a bit when the story was laid down but I suppose en effort had to be made to tell a tale. When they arrived in Peru the film rattled on with the quicksand, jungle car chase, this section was very good imo, people did not like the Monkeys and rope swinging it seems and the driving off the cliff and 3 waterfalls was yes over the top and unbelievable but I do not go to see Indiana Jones for a sense of realism. The ending again has received a late of hate mail with the Aliens and flying saucer, it did not bother me as the film was based in 1957 with the Cold war , russain hostilities, alien paranioa and area 51 so the story reflected this period in time.

In summary there was a lot to enjoy and I think the film will be regarded in a fairer light in future years but some people seemed to expect or want Raiders Part 2 and time has moved on since then. I would have it as below

Last Crusade 8.9
Raiders 8.8
Temple of Doom 8.5
Crystal Skull 8.1

Good fun but the magic was somehow not quite there.

Agree with most of that, but i'd still have Temple of Doom as the worst in the series.

I though the Last Crusade was the best, the chemistry between Ford and Connery was magical, nothing in the Crystal Skull could match that, Spielberg actually said the Last Crusade was as an apology to The Temple of Doom and Spielberg was not all that happy with The Temple of Doom.

Might have been worth mentioning some ** SPOILER ALERTS ** in the thread title Uncle S.

Overall I pretty much agree with your assesment though. It was "good", when expectations would have been for something special, which it wasn't. For me, the middle of the film dragged horrendously (some fidgety youngsters in the cinema would no doubt bear testament to that). It wasn't the all-action rollercoaster of its predecessors, some l-o-n-g drawn out scenes of exposition setting the storyline, so for me it was poorly paced.

I'll revisit it on DVD and no doubt enjoy it again, but overall for me it was undeniably a bit of a disappointment.

I really liked it - though Shia laBoeuf was awesome, the film was really funny and worked well as a standalone. Loved the ending! I give it an 8

Fair enough Easy. I think the film has some great moments and am glad it was made, some people on imdb have said its crap and ruined their childhood for heavens sake !. ANORAK alert. I think there was no way it could have been better than the last crusdae and maybe they should have left it at 3 but I have it on good authority Indy 5 is scheduled for 2011 and I hope the anti will be raised again.

Laura, good to hear. I think being 21 you wre 2 when the last crusade was made and was not born when raiders and temple of doom was made so the weight of expectation was not on your shoulders. The negative reviews seem to come from middle aged people who hero worshipped the first 3 films.

Indy 5 would be a mistake without HF, in my opinion. Nobody else could fill those shoes - if its not actually Indiana Jones, then whats the point ? Bond gets away with it, but thats a different kind of franchise thats been churning out films every 2-3 years. Thats not the case with Indy. People strongly associate the character with HF completely, Frank Lebeouf (or whatever his name is) can't just take up the roll as an action hero of this magnitude just by being his son.

Ford was good enough in this one to do another, I reckons.

I hero worshipped the other 3 and still really enjoyed this one loads. Didn't understand half of it, mind, but that's hardly the point is it?

I watched it last night, quite enjoyed it. The first half was very good, second half not so good.

One thing I'd say, having seen this, I Am Legend and trailers for The Hulk, CGI isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Also, seeing my boyhood hero Indiana Jones/Han Solo at 65 mulling over the death of his dad, James Bond, brought home to me the fact that I'm getting old.

Pooor effort.

There is invincibility and totally unrealistic stupidity.

The monkey scene was the camel straw, from then on I just waited for the film to end, so I would not need to see it again.

Poor characters, the cockney spy? Suddenly becomes money orientated?

Daft fights, how come Indy lad becomes near invincible.

Some good effects but lost in a tottally bizzare, unrealistic story and over the top stunts.

1/10.

i thought the whole plot was stupid with the aliens, they shud have called it indiana jones meets et or something like that

the only good bits were the action scenes and the idea for indys son was good

i feel disapointed with it because i have waited ages for a new indy film and i was so hyped up for it but it turned out to be crap and just a joke after raiders and the last cruisade , i didnt like temple of doom much but at least that was better than this crap

at least we know harrison has still got it after 20 years

According to Ray Winstone, Harrison can genuinely lash the top off a cigar from 20 yards. Bit of a dab hand with that whip by all accounts.

Didn't read your review and after seeing Easy 10's post I'm glad I didn't. Call yourself a movie fan and you put up spoilers with no warnings??

Am looking forward to seeing it but am being realistic with my expectations.

Thought Temple of Doom was utter shit. Loved the other two.

I don't think so much its a tired alien plot, that was the theme of the times in 1957 the same as the previous 3 films were based on the theses of the times they portrayed.
