Anyone know what the Bobby Moore is with that one?

Born Brian Hines so at what point did he change his name? Pre-Wings or because Fab Waccy Macca Thumbs Aloft asked him to before he'd let him join the band?

Now come on NSC, We can work it out and don't go asking your dads - your mother should know even if you don't.

He was Denny Laine when he was with The Move and then ELO.

I also believe he had a band called Denny Laine and the Diplomats before that which would be early/mid sixties.

So predating 1967's Penny Lane then by the sound of it.

say you dont mind is one of my all time favourite songs. Also go now is in my top 5. Denny Laine was actually born in ship street hence the surname.

He wasn't in The Move nor ELO.

He was, however, in The Moody Blues.

Oh right, sorry for false info, it's all a bit incestuous in Birmingham and I haven't read the book for a while.

I get confused with the whole Elo/Move/Idle Race/Denny laine stuff. Maybe it was other members of his first bands that moved on, someone called Ace the Face or something or other springs to mind.

Oh and Bev Bevan of course

Throw stevie winnwood and traffic in the mix too, most of those bands met at a record shop called the diskery on bristol road in brum, its still there owned by the same people who have an encylopedic knowledge of music. If you are ever up in brum for a game its well worth a diversion to, best record shop i have ever been to.

What are you on about? His "professional" name has always been Denny Laine, long before the song Penny Lane. ???

He was the voice on Go Now.

You're not thinking of the Spencer Davis Group are you? They were very big in Brum I believe.

Spencer Davis group became Traffic, stevie winwood was the main singer. I do believe he was only 15 years old when he sang the vocal on "Im a man".

You sure? Thought he was 15? thought he was only 18 when he formed Traffic? could be well wid eof the mark though. Even so he had a f***ing incredible voice for his age.

If you ever get the chance to read the ELO story by Bev Bevan, it's a bloody good read about how all the struggling rock and roll bands of the 60's, especially in the Birmingham area, formed, split up and merged with one and other obviously focussing on Bevan (The Move) and Jeff Lynne (The idle Race).

Pretty certain that Bevan was the drummer with Denny Laine and the diplomats before they had a bit of a fall out.....he went on to form the Move whilst Laine went to the Moody Blues.

15 when he joined I think. I love Traffic, shame the egos became so big that Dave Mason left. Great band and all so ridiculously young to be writing and making fantastic music that still stands up today.

About 10 years ago one summers day i got on my scooter and headed out of swindon to go and look for the cottage in the berkshire downs that Traffic recorded in with Jimmy Miller. After a fair bit of searching and at the end of a bridlepath i found it. An old woman who actually bought it off them still lives there, she said i was the first person to turn up there other than the band! she was lovely, made me a squash and showed me round, took some great photos. Proper lush day.
