Dennis Healy RIP

RIP Mr Healey.
It's 'Lord'.

A man not afraid to threaten the undeserving rich,.
And the deserving, too. He imposed a punitive 98% on the top slice of some (83% + 15% investment income surcharge). That's right, inflation massively outstripped interest rates in his Chancellorship yet he punched in the stomach those who had already seen the value of their capital dwindle. God knows how many entrepreneurs and top business brains he drove away from the UK.

An educated man treading the thin line between intellectual socialism and the smelly socks brigade. I think he would approve of Jezza, partly for the adventure. RIP.

I agree. My one big beef with labour (and the Tories, in fact) is incremental taxation (more incme, higer percentage take). Its saying that if you earn any more that 'this' threshold we will take nearly all of the extra in tax, so don't bother working harder. Idiotic. Flat rate of tax, please!

But since everyone in power agrees with incremental tax rates I can hardly criticise DH. And I laughed a bit when the BeeGees and Sean Connery phucked off abroad in tax exile. Ludicrous fools - they emigrated for a bigger house and better weather (as I would, maybe). Flicking one at the government, to boot, was pathetic.

He was actually quite right leaning in comparison to many in that disastrous Wilson government and against the general will in the party at the time (and with an ineffectual drunk as PM) did a lot to save the country.

A hero as far as I'm concerned. Good innings, even better eyebrows.

RIP.

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
I met him in 1968 when he was the Minister of Defence, whilst I was in the Navy. He was very personable. As has been mentioned, he was a disastrous Chancellor but a good MP.

In the shadow of Seaford Head
Saw him many times in Seaford. He shopped at the Coop not because of his socialist principles but as he told me "it's cheap and the staff are nice." His house in Alfriston had a magnificent view over the Cuckmere valley. Quite a character. RIP.
