Lineker’s salary works out as 0.3 pence per month for the person in the Tweet. Yet he’s claiming he has to choose between that and heating his house. Makes no sense, but then it is from The Express.

You have to remember that Gary Lineker seems to have quite an active social conscience and is very active ( or was until the appointment of the new DG ) in publicising it, suddenly, then it all makes sense. That's why he gets dogs abuse in certain papers, of course the owners of those papers make considerably more cash than him and are mostly non-doms to avoid paying tax.

Exactly. Look at the types that single him out on here. Lineker housed and raised awareness of refugees and asylum seekers.
The hate directed at him by the brexit/Tory types on here reached fever pitch when that news broke but all the lobbyists and peers they vote for go unchallenged. It’s all very route one and embarrassingly transparent.

The Beeb it seems is the new EU for the billionaire offshore media owners in UK print media, the bashing goes on, week in, week out. When you think about it, it is a foreign assault on one of our finest institutions. Those that buy this BS should spend so time in places Australia and Canada where the state broadcaster has been comprimised, where terrestrial TV is essentially shite

These offshorers resent the Beeb because despite the very different media landscape its still highly successful and continues to produce quality wide ranging content, its one of the UK's strongest brands, a source of soft power and yes its affordable. They hate that the Beeb can sustain itself with a modest annual charge and without constant ads interrupting programmes. For the non-dom media tycoons its just about them and their shareholders, they don't care about anything else

Meanwhile this Tory government attack on the Beeb continues, infiltrating it and weakens it where possible from within, giving foreign media barons even more power with greater cross media ownership and even undermining regulation

If the Beeb goes we will be a less country without it

Can't argue with that but sadly, the programmed morons who have to be contentious on principle, can't agree to any of that. It's impossible for any other broadcaster to produce the range of quality programming across TV an radio for the equivalent of about £4 a week.

Sadly the bashing will go on, the Tory Party at the forefront despite the fact they get an incredibly soft ride due to the BBC's official impartiality. Don't expect it to change as it suits the Tory Government to keep the BBC on its toes and under constant threat.... And the usual morons on here will be cackling like Hyenas.

Boris made it quite clear last year that he would be cracking down on the BBC , wake up and smell the coffee, Bias and wokeness have no place on a supposed neutral broadcasting service , hope that helps

Its weird to call BBC "state media". Would "state media" produce this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2wGQfqQBMM

How about "state funded"? Well, sure. But who funds the state?

Its really people funded media which, if done properly, is supposed to provide diversity you wouldnt get without it. And diversity seems fair when the population is diverse in most kinds of ways.

In pretty much every country where there is state media, they produce the best stuff. If they make a drama series, they dont have to fill it with product placements or more or less subliminal messages about how much better your life would be if you just consumed more junk.

It also allows for educational programs that no one else would make. No commercial channel would do something like Planet Earth because there is nothing to sell and there is beauty to hide so that everyone is fine with dumping some shit in the ocean or building a new highway somewhere.

BBC, SVT, DR, NRK, all of them produce stuff that wouldnt be produced if they were ruled by "the market", people things need or appreciate without knowing it until they have it. Of course not every penny is well spent, there might sometimes be political agendas, bad football pundits, poor acting, but that doesnt remove the overall gains of "state media". Nothing is ever going to be perfect.

You're right, nobody ever puts over the pro-racism angle on anything these days.

There are certainly some issues with the BBC, issues that don't stack up much against the good the BBC does. However, the attack on the BBC is an offshore and corporate campaign against Britain. Some people don't want bias correction, they won't be happy until the BBC is destroyed and our media is run by business with right wing, commercial interests.

Be careful what you wish for losing the BBC would be terrible for Britain.

Voters compelled to vote against their own interests is nothing new, voters supported policies in the 80's and 90's to sell off the countries assets to the private sector, including our railways and utilities, now we pay the highest rail fares and energy prices in Europe, sold our housing stock, now we have a housing shortage and most people cannot afford mortgages and rents. voted for weaker employment rights and union power now people have to suffer zero hour contracts, paltry minimum wage and less workers rights. Fast forward to this century and people vote for austerity and we have millions living in poverty and the government have to be shamed into feeding our children, then they vote for Brexit and losing their rights to freedom of movement and human rights laws. Now they have their eyes on the BBC, then what ? The NHS? Thats the big prize.

That's the trend we have seen for 40 years, Tory policies that serve the private sector and the wealthy to the detriment of ordinary people conned into voting against their interests, mostly because they were backed by the super rich owned media and control public opinion

This. 100%

They are removing obstacles to them making money. If a Tory government wins the next election, kiss goodbye to the BBC. Then the NHS.

We warned them about Brexit and they did not listen. now look at the mess we are in. They won't listen about the BBC and the flat out refuse to believe anyone is after the NHS.

We shall see.

Just look at the relationship British governments have had with the Murdoch empire for the past few decades. If all the major parties told them to f**k off which is essentially what they do in Brussels we'd be in a different place

Our government is infiltrated from media moguls to Russian donors and Think Tanks that won't real their funding.

Our democracy is broken, until we fix it little will change

This was another fanstastic documentary series from the BBC. Doing what they do best; intelligent, unbiased, balanced, storytelling.

The Iraq War:

Smashed that last night. Also currently enjoying the serialised biography of Robert Maxwell, on Radio 4.

Just another couple of great reasons the BBC is superb value for money.

its quite ridiculous that after our recent tete a tete we are both saying the same thing .....the media control here in Aus is bloody ridiculous with Murdoch having a 78% monopoly on Australian media .......the sad fact is that the wholesale lemmings in the community swallow newsccorps bullshit hook line and sinker , there is an irrefutable link between our current right wing government and Murdoch's media machine , the ABC is the only channel that reports on anything negative regarding our govt.

The UK government want the Beeb to end up like the ABC in Australia, squeezed out behind the commercial broadcasters.

The reach of Murdoch in Australian print is crazy only Egypt and China out of major countries have entities with greater concentration.

Yes quite and with the help of Murdoch there is every possibility that the BBC will be stifled , have its funding decreased and be infiltrated by "commercial journalism" just like the ABC is experiencing , since covid the LNP govt. has propped foxtel up to the tune of 60 million with tax payers money .....Murdoch pays Zero tax in Aus .......it's criminal.
