[Football] Defending free kicks. High line

What do you think about this? Passing fad or effective modern defending technique?

I get it. Managers are wary of allowing an easy opportunity to get the ball into the box where it can pinball around and anything can happen.

But sorry. I’m a dinosaur. I hate it. For two reasons.

First, it looks terrifying doesn’t it? Allowing a mass of space in the penalty area for a team to get a run on and attack, just looks like a totally counterintuitive thing to do.

Second, I don’t think it stops the pinball. Imagine we’d had set up to defending Pickford’s free kick on the 18 yard line, or even deeper …... Veltman, who gets his head on it first, can go and attack the header, get it up the pitch. If he’s backpedalling 10 yards, how much of a clearance is he going to be able to get on it?

I reckon this strategy is a flash in the pan. Teams do it because Guardiola tried it. It will get canned when teams continually concede goals or high value chances because of it. I just hope it isn’t us.
