Tricky one cover versions. They can either murder a great song or enhance it with a new interpretation. Below 3 faves that spring to mind:

Metallica's version of Lizzy's 'Whisky in the Jar'
Stranglers version of Warwicks 'Walk on By'
Alien Ant Farm cover of Jacko's Smooth Criminal

Greatest ever: St Etienne Only love can break your heart.

2nd greatest: Sacrifice covered by Sinead O'Connor

3rd greatest: Common people by William Shatner and Joe Jackson on backing vocals.

And I've got a 35 minute version of Tower of Song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. They might have been drunk when they recorded it.

Surely Shatner's Lucy in the Sky with Diamons is up there?

The correct answer to this question, if we're looking for the best, hasn't changed since it was 1st asked on NSC. Jimi Hendrix All Along The Watchtower, although Neil Young does a pretty good version on the 30 Year Dylan tribute

Loved the original too. Gotta love the Neil Young despite what Southern Man says about him. I fecking love the St Etienne version. Brings tears to my winky it does.

If you want a grim murdering of a great song then look no further than the latest version of Hallelujah by Leona Horseface.

Mind you I recall Adamski covering "All shook up". That was abysmal.

Hurt by Johnny Cash - feels like it was written for him in his twilight.

Bad miming on a "Ve haff big crazy disco fun" German TV program back in the 70's (look who else is on the show, quality :lolol:). Still a great cover by Nazareth though.
