For those who might be interested a new article
I know that in the medium to long term, he just couldn't fit our model, but that article already had me feeling nostalgic for the charismatic lunacy he brought. Then they chucked in a quote to remind me that Maupay's there too and it has me thinking about whether football should be about steady progress, building on what you have, smart business decisions and not risking the farm, or whether it should just be a load of Poyet/De Zerbi/Knockaert/Maupay/ nutjobs going off emotionally half cock, flying by the seat of their pants and occasionally pulling the spectacular out of nowhere. (before you say Maupay never did, I was thinking of 'Why did he let it bounce?' ;) )

It feels like comparing the happiness and contentment you can get from working hard, doing the right things, building security for your family and watching your kids grow and learn into adulthood with the thrills you can get from throwing it all up in the air and going out on a massive bender. Both can make great memories, but the latter, although unproductive, leaves you with far more entertaining stories. The current coaching and playing staff are all talented, hard working and dedicated, but I can't see any of them sharing this kind of joyful nutjobbery.

It feels like ages ago (to me) but it’s only just over a year…..a little reminder

Great post Stato.

Without a doubt one of the reasons I enjoyed the RDZ era was that it felt like an away day with your mates, rather than the slow, steady accumulation of a business plan that proceeded it.

I do think Fab is a nice compromise between the two, however. Forest away without a midfield was certainly the equivalent of a night out where you barf your curry down yourself, still try and pull and end up walking home having blown your cab fare on buying her a drink. But there were some good ones too. Late winners against City, Liverpool and West Ham were prime De Zerbi era entertainment, as was the second half at Spurs.

Enjoyed reading that and glad that RDZ’s natural mojo wasn’t defeated after Brighton.

I do wonder though reading that whether the real complaint against De Zerbi by Brighton fans and the Club wasn’t his emotional antics, washing dirty laundry in public or even complaining about our lack of recruitment and buy cheap policy but rather that our performances were very poor the last half of his full season and we finished lower than the previous two seasons.

I wonder if we’d qualified for Europe again, or at least finished in 7th or 8th, it would have been an entirely story and we would have continued to embrace the organised chaos of the mad perfectionist that was Roberto de Zerbi with opens arms?

It seems in football, the only cardinal sin for a manager (or a player) is not winning silver against expectations or dropping down the table.

Indeed. A better league finish and all could have been different.
But he wasn't sacked though.

Was he, @Anger ?

In 1555 Nostradamus predicted The Great Fire of London, the rise of Napoleon, the Mini Metro would have a 5th gear option by 1986 and the sacking of RDZ in 2024.

I know who I believe. #teamnostradamus

Yep. We finish 8th, and Palace, er, win the cup.....

I agree with your narrative . . . . 'let's go f***ing mental' is seductive,
but as a plan for a club, I'd prefer we plan like we plan,
as opposed to the plans of great trophy winners of recent years:
Wigan, Leicester, Pompey, Birmingham, Swansea and Palace.

I'd rather be a seagull than a butterfly.
Or a gadfly.

Glad I still have my Roberto DeZerbi moretti style T Shirt.

absolutely loved his tenure here

only manager we have had in the last few that really excited me and some of the best times I have had watching us.

was very sad when he was “ persuaded” to depart with his team
