What James does have that is absolutely key is confidence. Even after a major f***-up he can get his act back together. There's nothing a back 4 hates more than a keeper they feel lacks confidence because you never know what they'll do. Robinson is finished, he's shot.

He has and that's all well and good in terms of being able to get his act together, but he is very dodgy and makes very rash decisions sometimes.

I feel sorry for the likes of Lukic, Beasant and Flowers. None of them really got that many caps because of the likes of Chris Woods and David Seaman, but all 3 are better than the shower we've got now.

Its a shame Foster didnt find a loan club in the prem this year.

He could be number one, James was utter shite last night and should have saved the goal in my view

give younger players games. Carson, hart, forster.

All should be tried out in up coming friendlies.

I agree.

We need to be building for 2010, and I can't see James still being at a high enough level to be first choice then.

Alternatively, any chance we could get Michel Kuipers an English passport?

David James is about 6ft 5in and built like a brick shithouse and supposedly Englands best keeper, So why the f*** does he have to prance around doing an impersonation of sugar plum fairy looking for free kicks? He should'nt need a magic wand to control his penalty area his size and skill should be enough.

Good to see someone with a grasp of the modern game!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mmmmm, a good point.

I don't really think he's as good anymore. I think I'd prefer Green in goal over these two.

Well said !!

Rob Green has been amazingly overlooked and stated he'd love the job and couldn't understand why he's not been given a chance !!

Imo he's streets better than James and Robinson

If you look a few posts down, I would of already answered your question.

Seen it now.

Agree he is good and will probably replace James but at the moment, James just gets the nod from me (not that Capello ever takes any notice of my opinion).

As for others, McLaren didn't help Carson by playing in that crucial game and probably set him back a few years.

Thank goodness. Annoying though isn't it, because I reckon we all know better than Capello here....

the worrying one was where he came for a punch and too many players were in the way. rather than think better of it and reposition, he flapped at it, then pawed it weakly away. that miscalculation will pick up on by coaches and they will try to exploit it.

James is what, 36/37? He's been slightly erratic his whole career mixing the sublime with the most basic of mistakes. I'd be surprised if opposition coaches are only just picking up on the fact that he makes the odd ridiculous decision or flaps at crosses now and again. One dodgy performance isn't going to change anything, I don't think.

In terms of who should play in goal, it's a tricky one. Robinson was a decent keeper but his confidence appears to be completely gone. As chez says, it's going to take time for him to get back to his best. Carson looked a very good prospect until McClaren chucked him into the deep end. He too is going to need a bit of time. Foster looks a decent keeper but is wasting himself on man utd's bench. I always liked Kirkland, hopefully his injury problems are behind him. Green? He looks a decent enough premier league keeper but I'm not sure if he's really international quality.

At the moment, despite his age and occasional clangers, James is the best option, IMO. He's playing consistently well in the premier league, is experienced as an international keeper and as someone else pointed out he is very confident so that when he does cock up it doesn't affect his game. Whether he'll be good enough in two years time is any body's guess. Ideally one of the younger keepers will get there act together and be in a position to safely replace him.
