Im sorry but surely he could have looked at some videos of his own or watched him in action for Real Madrid. And any goalkeeper should know that they dont set up a wall and then stand behind it, or have their posts so unprotected!

From BBC

The Football Association has defended the video which they produced to help David James against France.
"There was no footage of (Zinedine) Zidane's free-kicks. I'll have to have a word with whoever put that together," England goalkeeper James revealed.

But an FA spokesman said: "We taped all France's recent games, and highlighted all the significant set-pieces.

"The fact is there were no free-kicks by Zidane during that period that were at all threatening."

Zidane's stoppage time free-kick against England drew France level at 1-1, before the Real Madrid star added a penalty to complete their 2-1 victory.

James admitted: "We watched the compilation tape of France in the build-up to the game to look at their set-piece plays, corners and free-kicks."

However, he was left unprepared for Zidane's moment of magic.

Four years ago, Zidane did score with a free-kick in the last European Championships in Holland and Belgium, curling in a shot in the quarter-finals against Spain.

France coach Jacques Santini compiled video tapes of recent penalties taken by not only Beckham but also his potential stand-in, Michael Owen.

"I got the team to watch countless video tapes of Beckham and Owen taking penalties," said Santini.

"Beckham always hit them to the left, normally lower but always to the left."

yeah I read that and thought the same! First things first, you study the two strikers, penalty takers, corners, wingers when crossing, free kick takers and midfield long shot experts.
James is looking for a scapegoat but his on his own with this one :shootself

The twat said the FA did not give him a video of a Zidane free kick. Does he not do his homework himself then?

How much money do these eejits get paid for playing football?

Surely to God they have enough motivation (even more obscene amounts of money) to prepare properly for upcoming games without relying on the FA

If I'm trying to land a big account I need to find out about the company-I don't have the petrochemical equivalent of the FA giving me the information I require-I have to find it out for myself.

It's about time we fans started asking more of these overpaid, over-pampered 'professionals'. These guys get paid feckin millions-it's about time they feckin' well earned it!

that raises an interesting point GUnter. . . .given the amount of salary that a player gets from his club, surely they could have contracts that insist on them working in the clubs best interests, ie studying old matches, training, coaching youngsters, physio, etc, all football related things which would improve their knowledge and ability, as well as benefitting the national game as a whole . . .and stop them mincing around in GQ every other week etc which at best is an un professional distraction.

none of them need to earn more than 2million a year (which many clubs pay) let alone another 2-5 on top

in defense of James... where would you get videos from? Sky? BBC? ITV? does the FA have some sort of archive or do they rely on the media outlets? Can you or i go and ask for a tape of game X? doubt it, and if you can it'd probably cost. Does Alan Hansen go and trawl through 100s of tapers for that clip of such and such he wants to make a point about? no, a researcher does.

So the FA has its own researchers, or a relationship with the media outlets to do the research and deliver recordings on spec. So really it is a cockup on the FA's part theat they couldnt produce video of Zidane taking free kicks. After all, James is a goalkeeper not a media researcher.

Having said that, its pretty stupid of James to use that as an excuse, he should have kept that comment to himself.

Utter rubbish from James- as if a video would have helped.

FA minion:"here we go then Dave, apparently when Zidane takes a free kick from just outside the box, he will aim for the far SIDE of the goal, furthest AWAY from the goalkeeper. In a startling newdevelopment, apparently he DOESN'T tend to waft the ball gently into the arms of the waiting keeper! Not only that, but he also seems to consistently try and kick the ball UP and OVER the wall, rather than straight into it"

James "wow, that's a new technique. I'm glad you showed me now, as I'd never have thought of it otherwise. Strewth!"
