Agreed Sam. Smith did naff all on Sat. Defoe came very close to winning it for us with that shot that hit the post.

It would be a shock ... but listening to Sven on Radio 5 Live this morning he seemed to be keeping options open regarding his willingness to drop players (except Beckham of course ... obviously fears he will release the three in a bed video with Posh!)

Defoe instead of Smith is a must based on how they played respectively on saturday.

Yeah that is right mate, Defoe is the answer. Him and Owen are too similar and Defoe at present is not ready. Smith gives a different option and holds the ball up and will not go missing in this sort of game.

I hate to say it, but with no Rooney, Heskey should have been in the squad, as Owen, Defoe and Vassell are all much the same, just Owen is streets ahead of the others.

And Defoe did what exactly?

Got the ball and ran head down into a crowd of defenders and hit the outside of the post.

Marvellous.

I know Smith didn't have a great game but he has the presence that will be needed. Aside from that we cannot play two strikers who are no taller than 5'7 in an international match, surely?

Also Smith off the ball at least went looking for space. Defoe is lazy like Leon. This is not the sort of game to start him in.

the ball again!!!!

the guys a liability & has begun to cost us games.
I cant help that think that if Sven does drop james then he is just bowing to public & media pressure in order to keep in in the job

Time to bring Carlton Cole into the squad at the expense of Defoe or Vassel. We need options in these squads.

I have to say, Saturday was his first mistake that has cost us. I am not confident when he plays, but in fairness, none of the goals in the summer were his fault.

Is it just me or do the top clubs pick the side for Ericsson?

Smith goes to Man Utd suddenly a first string England player.
Heskey gets sold from Liverpool. Gets dropped from England.

Why is Smith even being considered? He's just an average striker! I don't think he would even stan out in the Championship!

I would've waited until the end of the season to cast judgement on Smith if I were Sven, sure he's started of alright but he needs to get 20+ goals to be in contention for a starting place. Defoe is good but is a greedy little shite and that will be his failing...he wont ever get a run in the 1st team if he continues this way.

Exactly Lammy.

And in my opinion he neither has the pace or the power to be a success at International level.

About right, but I think the injury to Rooney has forced his hand and it showed against Portugal that Owen and Vassell do not work together and he is hardly justified in picking Heskey, when the guy has not scored for Birmingham yet.
