Danny's now well out in front on his own with 33 as our all time EPL goal scorer. As mentioned a lot on Saturday, he also reached the milestone of double figures for the first time. He's been an absolute bargain of a signing. Those who question the money we spent on Adam Lallana, may like to consider that his phone call got us Welbeck, a top value BOGOF if ever I've seen one.
I noted that Hurzeler took a moment to praise the medical staff as well as Danny and having listened to Barry Glendenning's drivel on the Guardian podcast today, where he joked that he didn't know he hadn't done it before and now thinks he's been stealing a living, I've taken a look at Welbz's record and can see where FH was coming from. Yes, this is the first season that he has scored 10 EPL goals, but it is also the most minutes he's ever played in an EPL season. He's currently played 2037 with two matches remaining and his previous highest was 2014 for Man Utd in 2011/12 when he was 21. He scored nine goals that season and nine in 2013/14 when he had a rare injury free season, but was competing for a starting place with Rooney, Van Persie and Chicharito. (Seven was not his previous best Barry).
At 34 Danny has enjoyed more minutes than ever and missed only 5 games through injury this season. With his past litany of problems, this is a fantastic reflection of his hard work, resilience and dedication and of the excellent work done by the medical team. Using his goals per minute for each season, it seems that, had he been fortunate enough to have been able to play this number of minutes over every season of his career, this would have been the fifth time he'd have scored over ten EPL goals and this sum would have seen his average goals per season over a seventeen year career at 9.12. (Admittedly helped by a statistical anomaly caused by him scoring twice in just 118 minutes of play in his first season off United's bench). Even with the injuries, counting his club and senior international career, he has sustained an average of a goal involvement (assist or goal) every 2.99 games for a seventeen year career. He has also scored more than ten in a season in all competitions three times previously, twice for Man Utd and once for Arsenal.
He also scored 16 goals in 42 matches for England, making him 34th on the country's all time goal scorers list and with a better goals per game ratio than Defoe, Keegan, Watkins, Rashford, Lampard, Wright, Vardy, Fowler, Sterling, T Francis, Sheringham, Scholes & Beardsley to name just a few.

Great post. Another little interesting stat, he is the only player in our history to score for us in the premier league, FA Cup, League Cup and European competition.

To be fair to Barry, he was joking. He’s always been complimentary of Welbeck.
He wasn’t alone in being surprised at that stat either.

A snippet I heard the other day, until his goal against Wolves he was the highest scoring player to have never reached double figures in a Premier League season. Feels like quite a niche stat but at least he’s not the holder anymore.

I only said 'quite like'. It's catchy, it's a bit throwaway and I like the refrain 'Christ you know it ain't easy' in the chorus. I'm also quite fond of ballads (as in songs that tell a story) and being a music history geek, am even more of a sucker for ballads that tell stories about musicians. Creeque Alley was always my favourite M&Ps song, 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' one of the few post Syd Pink Floyd songs I really like. Piano Man, Nightshift, True, Sweet Soul Music, White Man in Hammersmith Palais, even American Pie, I'm a sucker for songs that seem to show a glimpse behind the curtain.

I think Barry knows a fair bit about football. His analysis tends to be pretty accurate in my view (a little like Chris Sutton) if not terribly informative (unlike Wilson, Liew, Bandini). But yes he's also entertaining, and the dynamic between him and Max but also all the others is joyful.Thanks. I like Barry too. You've just made me look it up and I've now found out that on that day that we were at Hereford our veteran striker hadn't yet reached his seventh birthday. I'm now feeling quite old. That led me to look further and find out that twenty one of our squad weren't born. Karou Mitoma was born seventeen days after the game. I can now cross out the 'quite' and just feel old. If my maths is correct, James Milner hadn't yet started secondary school. I might go for a lie down.
