The late and much missed Nigel ‘Bushfire‘ Erskine’s Dad John, aged 18, was in one of the landing crafts.

He often spoke about the experience, there were 40 in the craft, aged 18-23, by the time they reached the beach there were only 9 of them left, hence when dear old John left us in 1992 he requested his ashes be scattered on the beach in Normandy with his fallen comrades.

Lest we forget ❤️

My Dad was on board HMS Qualicombe, mine sweeping the night before to clear the passages to the Normandy beaches, and then as dawn broke, firing at the gun emplacements on the cliff tops, to try and take them out.
He served 33 years in total from 1935-1968.

That scene in SPR where the mother collapses on her porch as the local priest gets out of the military car…Got me again the other night when it was on.

I only found out recently that my dad was on a ship clearing mines the day before D-Day. As I was estranged from my dad I only found this out shortly before he passed, so know no other details, which is a shame, really.

If you know his date of birth, full name and anything about his service in the RN, you can apply to Kew for his service records.
