Same here. Never got the connection between Palace and travellers. Just seems to be a general derogatory term, but not actually based on anything, unless I'm missing something.

Depends on where your definition of 'race' stops. Some ethnicity monitoring surveys include 'Member of the Irish traveling community' and as such, any generalisms or slurs could be considered discriminatory and/or racist.

The Pikey/Chav debate is interesting. I read a good book by Owen Jones recently (see link) that, although I didn't agree with all he says, does give some perspective. I personally choose not to use either term nowadays, but don't get offended on anyone's behalf If I hear them.
