In the UK you request a "Basic Disclosure" via any Police Station.

You might be able to use US Freedom of Information laws to request any information held on you.

I might mention that in the UK most (not all) crimes and subsequent convictions are considered 'spent' after seven years and thus officially don't exist anymore (they're still held on the PNC however).

In the US no such rule applies and that's a little flaw with their three strikes law. Convictions gained in your youth remain with you for the rest of your life.
