Craig Bellamy - drunk, abusive and guilty

From the BBC Wales website:-

Bellamy fined for nightclub abuse

Soccer star Craig Bellamy has been fined £750 after admitting threatening abusive or insulting behaviour outside a Cardiff nightclub in March.

Bellamy appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to the abuse charge. Two other charges of racially aggravated behaviour was dropped at an earlier hearing.

The 24-year-old Wales international and Newcastle striker admitted being drunk and abusive after being thrown out of a bar in the early hours of the 24 March this year.

He was told by Deputy District Judge Anthony Smith Jones that he had "let himself down" as he was such a "role model".

In addition to the fine the player was ordered to pay £75 costs.

Confrontation

Bellamy was on a night out in his native city when he got into a tussle after being refused entry into the Jumpin' Jaks nightclub because it was too late, said Martin Thomas, prosecuting

A confrontation then followed in with which Bellamy was thrown down the stairs leading to the club.

"He continued to shout from the bottom step towards the staff," said Mr Thomas.

"Mr Bellamy became involved in exchanges with members of the public who had observed this incident.

"By that stage, a crowd had gathered to watch what was happening."

The footballer, who now lives in the Jesmond area of Newcastle, had been in his home city preparing for a Wales' match against Azerbaijan in the Euro 2004 qualifying matches in March.

Bellamy voluntarily attended a police station soon after the incident.

While he did not say anything in court, his solicitor Mark Haslam. said he was very embarrassed about what had happened and did not want to appear back in court.

"He accepts he needs to put this sort of behaviour behind him and move forward.

'Severe provocation'

"He has much more important things to do with his life."

A statement was issued later on Bellamy's behalf in which he apologised for his behaviour but claimed he had been "severely provoked".

The statement read: "Craig Bellamy appeared in court in Cardiff this morning in connection with events occurring in Cardiff several months ago.

"Craig acknowledged to the court that he had used abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

"Craig apologises for his innappropriate swearing and reaction following severe provocation."
