From the Reading site

Steve Coppell said he is feeling "a mixture of emotions" after being appointed reading boss.
"I'm very much excited by the prospects of taking this club on, anxious about the responsibility of that, and sad to leave Brighton because its a terriffic club.

"But when I get invol;ved with players, the blinkers will come on and I'll just concentrate on trying to do the right thing to get results to move this clib onwards and upwards.

Asked why:
"the infrastructure is here for Reading to be a Premiership club and this is an opportunity for me to try and pit my wits against the best and hopefully get into the Premiership.

"In recent weeks with the turmoil I think the ream has been a little distrupted but now I just hope I can continue Alan pardew's good work, put the players back on track and try and direct them further. I can't guarantee success bu t I will be doing my utmost tp get there.

"A lot of managers will be envious of my position here, and I jusr relish the opportunity. the potential of this club is massive. The team showed last season they're a hell of a good team and it certainly doesn't need a complete refit. I hope that my teakeover can be fairly seamless and we can get back on the winning trail.

Steve has signed a contract until the end of the 2004/05 season and he explained: "I do like shorter contracts because the pressure is on to get results and football is a results industry. If I get results, great, if I don't, it'll be a question of "Who's next"? i said that though, not the chairman.

"i ddid speak with Alan a lot while he was here so I 've always been aware of the situation here. And in the last week, when I've been in negotiations to come here, I poke to him a clouple of times to get a feel of the squad and the environment I'll be working in.

I can't believe that I want Palace to thump Reading the next time they meet.

What did you expect him to say? It's the usual bollocks every manager gives to the new club when they start a new job.

I hear Leeds will be looking for a new manager soon, and Coppell should be on the short list
