Going to Orlando via Boston with AA soon and have been worrying whether my bags get automatically transferred to the ongoing flight or whether I have to collect them and check in again?

Where's bhaexpress when you need him?

Not quite ...

Yes, they will be tagged and sent through to your final destination.

BUT ....
On arrival at your entry airport, you have to pick up your bags, go through a security check and then put them onto the transfer baggage belt and they will be put onto your connecting flight.

At least, I'm pretty certain that's right.

Actually, what usually happens is that you have to claim your bags and take them through customs yourself. Right after exiting customs there is usually an agent for your airline who will take them off your hands again.

When I went to San Francisco in August, I had to change at Chicago. I had to pick my bags up at Chicago and take them through Customs. Once through your done with customs on internal flights. You then have to give your luggage to the AA transfers desk.

That was with AA. The biggest worry is that it takes forever to get through customs and you end up worrying your going to miss your flights.

Could just ask at airport?
When we went from Boston to Peru via Miami they did it for us, however from Vancouver to New York Via Ottwa we had to collect them.

Check - it varies. Much safer to make sure that they're transferred than to assume so and find they're still waiting at Logan.

When I've had a connecting flight to catch before, they have automatically been sent to the second flight. You hand them in at check-in on the first flight as usual, then the next time you see them is a bggage reclaim at your final destination. Just check at check-in this will be done for you.
This happened with Qatar Airways, and on AA/Virgin

Oh ok, thanks, I thought it was a stupid question with a simple answer but it looks like it varies.

I don't want to be worrying about missing the connecting flight but luckily we get all the us customs stuff done at shannon, until next year anyway, so hopefully I won't have that stress.

Cheers

Better than that, there are padlocks available which are clearly marked on the packaging as suitable for the USA (It's something like TSA approved). Security have a key which allows them to unlock all padlocks of that type, meaning they don't have to break into your luggage.

And make sure in your hand baggage you have spare clothing in case your main baggage is delayed. T Shirt, shorts/jeans, pants.
Saved me a number of times on US trips. My experience is connecting flights = lost baggage.
Hope it's better for you. have a great time.
