I know you hold no candle for Boris but, as someone who lost their Mum two weeks ago and so know how it feels, I'd suggest that comment is somewhat below the belt.

I'm sorry for your loss. Try not to think of her death every time someone else dies. Once we start conflating our feelings it can trigger a downward spiral. I can assure you that Boris isn't going to be the only person whose mum dies this year, so it's best you brace yourself if this is going to be an issue.

My mum is dead too. This doesn't stop me pondering how many people's mums died because of Boris' cavalier attitude to Covid. So I have no qualms making facetious reference to his inability to remember how many kids he's sired (which is what my quip meant - you may not have got the point but plenty did). I'm all for empathy, but it's a two way street when it comes to public figures. And it isn't for you to shoulder the burden of his loss, no matter how much you like the man (if you do; I don't recall that to be the case).

I am trying to scratch my head and come up with the name of a left winger who has expressed a callous attitude to the deaths of countless people that arguably died owing to his decisions, so that I can say 'Imagine if someone had made a waspish comment about his mum dying.' I can't. There have been many fools on the left but callous disregard of human life isn't typically their thing.

I suppose we can argue that Tony Blair is a left winger (one of my brothers would wet himself at the idea, but...), and we can argue he caused the death of thousands by supporting Bush in the middle East (the same one of my brothers certainly thinks so). I don't recall him ever mocking their deaths but let's pretend for a moment he did.

Can you imagine Mouldy Brains, Das Reich and Bakewell Tart piling into someone who made a waspish comment about the death of Tony Blair's mum? Can you? Can you though?

Pretty much sums up my feelings (or lack of). As you say, it's hard to feel sympathy/empathy with someone like him, and that's not to say I take pleasure in his inevitable sadness. Not that it will, but I'd like to think it might bring home to him the impact his behaviour has had on others, and give him something to reflect upon.
It's also no surprise whatsoever that the Troll Squad become so self-righteous (a bit like the Krays- nice boys who loved their dear ol' mum...), yet have been happy to bandy around thinly-veiled suggestions of paedophilia, the oft-quoted 'homophobic thug' insult, and the suggestion that anyone who doesn't want 'timewasters' turned back, must be a supporter of human slavery/misery etc.
Sad bunch indeed, but no less than I expected.

I express my sympathy as a fellow human being, not as a political comment like some ********s have taken the opportunity to do including, it would appear, yourself.
