I reckon its well sad for this beast of a machine to dissapear grrrrr.
They have been very reliable and just the 1 crash although a terrible disaster surely its a wasted gem of a plain and must admit it will be strange never to hear that roar again.:censored:

RESPECT TO THE MIGHTY CONCORDE!!!!!!!!!!:clap2: :drink:

Sadly, the economics of keeping it flying just don't add up. Spares for it have to be specially crafted, rather than "off the shelf" like newer aircraft. The overheads on the running of Concorde were huge. Richard Bransons claim that he could make it pay was little more than a publicity gimmick IMO. He knew there was no way British Airways would sell to him, thus giving him a convienent excuse to squeal foul.

Richard branson was offered Concorde about 10 years ago at a reasonable price but it was declined as its almost impossible to make any money out of it.

The recent stuff was definately all PR, of which our Rich doenst mind a bit.

Not the real one
Fact is that since the announcement of it's retirement, Concorde has made BA a great deal of money. BA would carry on with the operation as 6 months or so before the crash in Paris, BA applied for an extended licence from the FAA and CAA until 2015, from the previous 2005. Since 11Sept '01 the company Airbus, (that makes the parts for Concorde) could no longer make the parts at a price that could make money from Air France and BA. The cost of running it would have broke the bank for BA, Air France and the customer, as prices would have doubled. Concorde was no longer cost effective. Infact hasn't made money for the past 5 years apart from these last 6 months. However BA believed the appeal of Concorde bought it publicity and passengers to the airline as a whole. However, since no-one would make the parts, it had to come to an end.

It is true that Virgin Atlantic officaly offered to buy Concorde from BA but is was a bluff. Branson could not got anyone to make the parts, a fact he knew as BA had exhausted all avenues to try to keep Concorde flying. Branson was using it as a publicity stunt, a jibe that BA did not repond to. I wish BA had called his bluff and accepted the £1 bid.

Technology means today are such that we could build a bigger better faster passenger plane but the costs would be too high and nobody can be arsed! It will be a long time before a supersonic passenger plane is ever seen again (unless BA do keep one for shows etc, but then it would not be a passenger plane I suppose).

Anyway, as someone said earlier its only a plane, and Air France got rid of Concorde ages ago. Don't remember the French going on about it.

For me it was a cramped jet that was just bloody noisey.

I saw it once fly over the NEC in Birmingham whilst waiting to go into a concert and I and everyone else looked up and said f***ing hell!!
You don't get that with a 737? :nono:

I dare say it won't be long before some super rich bloke or airline will get one out of retirement
I know Branson wanted a couple but they told him to f*** off.
Just like the lottery.
Sad really!

The final landing of 3 Concordes at Heathrow is on the telly at around 4ish this afternoon, the end of an era.

The really sad bit is that after 35 years we cannot design and produce a replacement. This is the first time in the history of aviation that we have taken a step backwards.

Not really a disaster. It was a French plane with a load of Germans on it.

As Clarkson said - stopping Concorde represents a great big step back for British engineering.

Although it is only a plane, Concorde is fecking cool! I used to work at BA, in an office overlooking the Concorde hangar - roll in to work and see three of the buggers parked up outside was pretty cool! Even got to sit in a cockpit on one, and got a cheapy ride to New York on one!

At risk of sounding like a geek - very very cool!
