How many clubs are there left that we've never finished above in the league. I'm guessing we finished above Man U for the first time this season? (I'm happy to be corrected on any of this). Spurs and Chelsea we did a couple of years ago I think.

But I guess we've never finished above Arsenal, or Liverpool. I imagine we've been above City in the 80s?

Is it only those two we need to tick off the list?

City was earlier than that. 1979/80

We got within 8 places of Liverpool in the 1958/59 season.

I bet we were pinching ourselves then.

Technically, we contested the 1910 Charity Shield on an equal footing with 1909-10 First Division champions Aston Villa. By defeating them, it could be argued by those with a disposition to do so that we finished the season higher in the pecking order than either Liverpool or Woolwich Arsenal (2nd and 18th in Division 1 respectively).

Does this sound any more convincing if I sprinkle phrases such as "technically" and "it could be argued..." around?

I'm afraid not.

One of the great things about this run of us being good is shedding all the small club stats. You know, the grounds we've never won at, the teams we've never beaten.

It would be great if at some point during this purple patch we could find a way of finishing above the current top two.
