Both arrived on swap deals though didn't they? so no actual firm monetary valuation.

Wasn't Ritchie's some weird triangular swap deal?:

Peter Ward BHA - NF
Andy Ritchie MU - BHA
Gary Birtles(?) NF - MU

I thought Richie left in swap deal with Terry Connor but I thought we acquired him for £500,000. I have a distinct recollection that I had a poster on my wall in the 80s which stated our record signing was Andy Richie for £500,000 signing as

Lawro was £100k in summer of 77. Remember being shocked that the Albion were splashing that much cash at the time. Teddy Maybank arrived later that year (October, November) for £175k, I think Not sure that was exceeded until we signed Michael Robinson and Gordon Smith, both for £400k in the summer of 1980, unless we paid more for John Gregory in the summer of 1979.

All done from memory, so feel free to correct if inaccurate.

Maybank was definitely a record signing.

I thought CMS was 2.2 million rising to 3.2 in add ons which he never got to?

Yep. We would have had to pay Posh another £750,000 when he learned to control a ball with less than two touches.

Mark Lawrenson £100k
Teddy Maybank £238k
John Gregory £250k
Gordon Smith £400k
Andy Ritchie £500k

It *could* be argued that Bobby Zamora should be in that at £520k, which is £100k when signed from Bristol Rovers plus 30% of the profit when we sold him to Spurs for £1.5m.

Then Will Buckley.

Uncanny. When I saw 1234andcounting's post I said to myself I thought Maybank was £238k and you confirmed it as I scrolled on. Such an odd amount and I believe the rumours were that it paid for their their riverbank stand!

We bought Ritchie from United for £500K Peter Ward went to Forest and Gary Birtles went to United I thought both of those were also £500k so nobody paid any money out.

No. No it couldn't. We paid 100k to buy him. That had nothing to do with the sale. The other money was to do with the sale not the purchase.

We didn't pay 100k to buy him - we paid 100k plus a clause that we would pay a further 30% of any future profit. Although on the day we signed him we could only put a firm value on the 100k portion of the transfer, the sell-on clause was a fundamental part of the contract. We paid 520k for Zamora.

That is a clause on the sale though? Not on the aquisition.

When we purchased Zamora from Bristol Rovers, we agreed to pay 100k up front and 30% of any future profit we made. The actual VALUE of that "sell-on clause" was only determined when we sold him to Spurs, but the clause was a part of our acquisition of Zamora.

Wrong! Wardy (on the fringe of the England team) went to Forest for £400K. Gary Birtles (also on the fringes of the England team) went from Forest to United for £1,250,000, and a young forward with relatively few first team appearances came from Utd. to us for £500K. We 'lost' £100K in the deal, and Utd. lost £750K. Forest got a player as good as - or better than - the one they sold, and got paid £850K for doing it!

So basically, Cloughie shafted Man. Utd. and us. Well, he never did like us much anyway, did he? The feeling's mutual.............
