Claridge to revive playing career

Claridge is a pundit on the BBC's The Football League Show
Striker Steve Claridge is to come out of retirement at the age of 43 to help cash-strapped club Weymouth.

The former player-manager of the non-league outfit is to play for nothing against Blue Square South rivals Bromley in Saturday's home clash.

Claridge has played 1,008 matches in a career spanning more than two decades.

Dave Higson, Weymouth's acting chairman, said: "Steve will not be coaching or managing, just playing some games to help out in our survival bid."

The club's board of directors met on 29 August and set themselves a deadline of 10 days to find new investment of around £50,000 or face the prospect of going into administration.

Not only an ex Brighton player but also seemingly a pretty decent bloke. Not to mention the fact that he is one of the best pundits around who crucially seems to give a shit (unlike the likes of know it alls like Alan Green) about leagues below the Premiership. Hope Weymouth sort out their problems.

P.S. Hope this isn't fixtures

Great player. I was one of the lucky few to see him play in his only performance for Worthing against AFC Wimbledon 2 and a half years ago, and he looked good then, so good luck to him at weymouth, is a great gesture of goodwill being shown that is clearly lacking in the game today where players are wanting millions for testimonials they won't reach because they are moving clubs!!

Does this mean we'll no longer have to put up with his pathetic attempts at punditry? Thank the Jesus for that, what a truly awful "expert" the man is. Decent player, did the rounds and played a disproportionate amount of games for a man with his ability, so fair play to the guy. But a pundit, he is not.

Having read his book I realised what a hard time the Weymouth fans gave him when he last played for them. Had taken at least a 50% pay cut to go there as player/manager, and then took lots of abuse from fans for 'taking lots of money' out of the club in wages. This shows what a decent bloke he is for going back there.

On the subject of Weymouth did the larks that punted all that money on them to lose last year when they knew they were going to field a youth side get to keep their winnings??
