TBH that would be fairly pointless as the Russians could blow it out of the water at will and one ship really isn't going to worry Putin. It was incredible to see the level of intimidation that the " Self Defence Forces " are able to get away with. Ukrainian Navy ships, tied up in their own country's ports, have been made to surrender their small arms and are under a blockade and unable to leave harbour. Quite incredible what Putin can get away with.

Actually only ships over a certain size need permission to use the Bosphorus. It could be accompanied by any number of smaller vessels.

It's difficult to guess which ship this will be yet as any US Navy vessels in the Mediterranean could equally be heading to Syria.

Plenty of theories that it's the 18 ship George HW Bush carrier group.

Symbolic power projection I imagine.

But Sevastopol is leased to the Black Sea Fleet for another 30 or so years, so not chance of losing that base.

True but its not just Sevastopol and there are also the freedom of the straits to consider. Russia does not want a government in the Ukraine that is Ukrainian nationalist and may try and limit Russia military movement in the region.

The Russian government does have reason to fear the new leaders in the Ukraine and Im reasonably sure some of those members would love nothing more than making Russia's stay in Sevastopol as difficult as possible.

It can only be symbolic as US ships will not be allowed to actively support Ukraine if the shooting starts.

I just heard that the newly coalesced " Crimea " has asked Russia to be allowed to join it, with a referendum on the issue to follow in 10 days. It's amazing how fast democracy can work when it's the kind of democracy that Mr Putin likes.

Bad day for Ukraine with Russia effectively serving notice on annexing Crimea.

Back to Downing Street tonight to urge Cameron to keep UK's promise in Budapest Memorandem. Pretty grim mood.

Ok everyone, stand down. Apparently Crimea is now officially part of Russia according to the new Crimean government, the votes to confirm this are being printed now with this result which will be confirmed in 10 days. That went well then ?

....a third of it yes, though Russia's economy will collapse in a heap without those sales.....Putin can't afford it.

Indeed.

Embargoing the gas supplies from Russia would cost Putin 100 billion $ per year and, as you say, collapse the economy.

US now talking of supplying Europe's gas, and of course Norway could take up a lot of the slack as well.

I suspect this measure is being kept in reserve in case of a bigger Putin land grab.

Hoping that her patriotism will win her a position on Fox News spreading US propaganda instead
The difference being that RT is state funded, state managed and state censored,... even though it broadcasts in English,..... what is broadcast is exactly in line with Russian state policy ( Putin policy),..... at least on Fox News and stations like that, you may get a particular slant ( US centric), but you are at least allowed to ask hard questions if the occasion arises.

This is quite an informative and seemingly unbiased video about Ukraine's strategic importance what I just watched.

Worth the 10 minutes as another view on the situation . As I said on another thread , every country involved is only interested in it's own agenda and it's own gains whether you agree with the Russians or EU/NATO , the people I feel sorry for are the Ukrainians themselves as their country is the board in a game of chess .

With no ask or expectation, if anyone wants to apply their own personal sanctions against Putin because of his actions in Crimea and potential invasion of the rest of Ukraine then please just don't buy any goods with a barcode digital code beginning with '46'

eg barcode 460009-040147 is an item produced in Russia.

Every single ruble lost to the Russian economy makes a difference.

firstly this is a myth, there's no country ID. secondly if there were, products made in say germany, using energy from russian gas wouldnt show a russian code. ees complicated.

Its amazing how the Russians, sorry,Putin, can do pretty much as he pleases. Obama is a laughing stock and the UN is a complete waste of space. I read yesterday that two prominent Ukrainian anti Russian leaders were arrested by Russian " security " men and have disappeared. They may come up with some trumped up charges or carry on as now just denying the men's existence. Either way the Russians are unstoppable. Sooner or later the Russian provacation will result in Ukrainian forces shooting and the Russians will get the excuse they want to invade. It will be a nice measured invasion, just enough to secure the Crimea and the parts of East Ukraine they want. Then they will stand their forces down and start a long long period of " negotiation ", leaving a large force to " maintain peace " and there is nothing that anyone can do.

I hope it's a mistake.
