Can anyone remember the names,in the early 60s I looked in the paper and there where 32 advertising shows A and B movies, plus news and cartoons,I think that only The Duke of York is still going.
Would be great to go back in time and visit all of them. The Vougue that is now the Sainsburys on Lewes Road was supposed to be one of the biggest, alas it was knocked down in 1980. ] QUOTE
i started my career here in 1974, and am still in the business, having worked at the classic in western road , and presently at the Duke Of Yorks since 1980
Not Sainsburys. The frontage of The Vogue building is still there. I think it's called The Hub. It was only the Vogue for a short period of time. For most of its life, it was the Gaiety. The Vougue that is now the Sainsburys on Lewes Road was supposed to be one of the biggest, alas it was knocked down in 1980.

The Vogue,I think that was the Gaiety in my time. Saw my first film there Diana Durbin in 3 Little Ladies in Blue and Hopalong Cassidy in The Marked Bullet. Other cinemas were the The Curzon,Palladium,Rothsbury,Arcadia Acadia.Would be great to go back in time and visit all of them. Yep. It felt wrong when I was claiming that the Hub is what survives. This is a photo of the last days of The Classic. The frontage alas is not there, it was to the right of what is 'THE HUB' now and the road was a lot narrower during the vogue/ace/gaiety time, the pub was ajoined to the cinema, but you are correct in as much as sainburys is not actually where the cinema was. It was called the 'VOGUE' from 1971 to 1979, briefly being named the 'CLASSIC' before its closure in 1980

Although born in Hove I grew up in Shoreham from 1954 and have never heard of the Norfolk, there was an old disused one on the seafront nearer the Harbour, but that looked as though it must have closed pre-war.The only cinema in Shoreham when I was growing up was The Ritz which was next to Ropetackle. And the ABC Portland Road that's named twice on that list was also known as The Granada.
