Can anyone remember the names,in the early 60s I looked in the paper and there where 32 advertising shows A and B movies, plus news and cartoons,I think that only The Duke of York is still going.

Near Ducks, Geese, and Seagulls
Curzon (Western Road)

ABC (East Street)

Astoria (London Road, near St Peters)

Continentale (Kemp Town) Saw my first xxx film there in my early teens

There was one down West Street before you got to the current one, can't remember the name.

There was one at The Clocktower (where Boots are currently). I can't remember the name.

That's all I can remember for now. :)

Would be great to go back in time and visit all of them. The Vougue that is now the Sainsburys on Lewes Road was supposed to be one of the biggest, alas it was knocked down in 1980.

Brighton cinema directory

I reckon I have been too 6 of them, although some are counted twice on the list in different guises.

Not the 60's, but wasn't there a cinema along Eastern Road that was bombed in the second world war?

i started my career here in 1974, and am still in the business, having worked at the classic in western road , and presently at the Duke Of Yorks since 1980

Not Sainsburys. The frontage of The Vogue building is still there. I think it's called The Hub. It was only the Vogue for a short period of time. For most of its life, it was the Gaiety.

Although the Vogue (formerly Gaiety and Ace) showed porn movies and had live strippers for most of the 1970s, I still got to experience it as a 9-year-old. For one week sometime around 1971 they packed away the smut and the fleas and showed a double bill of The Wizard of Oz and Tom Thumb - the real films, not X-rated remakes. I kid you not...

Although as a kid I was more fascinated by the adverts in the Argus that promoted someone calle Jackie Rainbird doing her thing on Thursday afternoons...

The frontage alas is not there, it was to the right of what is 'THE HUB' now and the road was a lot narrower during the vogue/ace/gaiety time, the pub was ajoined to the cinema, but you are correct in as much as sainburys is not actually where the cinema was. It was called the 'VOGUE' from 1971 to 1979, briefly being named the 'CLASSIC' before its closure in 1980

The Vogue,I think that was the Gaiety in my time. Saw my first film there Diana Durbin in 3 Little Ladies in Blue and Hopalong Cassidy in The Marked Bullet. Other cinemas were the The Curzon,Palladium,Rothsbury,Arcadia Acadia.

Yep. It felt wrong when I was claiming that the Hub is what survives. This is a photo of the last days of The Classic.

Although born in Hove I grew up in Shoreham from 1954 and have never heard of the Norfolk, there was an old disused one on the seafront nearer the Harbour, but that looked as though it must have closed pre-war.The only cinema in Shoreham when I was growing up was The Ritz which was next to Ropetackle. And the ABC Portland Road that's named twice on that list was also known as The Granada.

You are correct, was renamed 'THE RITZ' in 30s it was situated in High street, shoreham, and closed in 1964

Arcadia where the Labour club is/was on Lewes road
never went in there but remember passing it on the bus on the way to Lewes when I was very small and I'm sure it was still going in the late 50's or early 60's

I'v just looked it up on one of the Brighton sites and it was known affectionately as "the scratch"

That photo answers a lot of questions for me, showing clearly the building next to the hub and not where Sainsburys is.

Amazing small cinema timeline Goodfella, I love the DOY and hope its always remains a part of my Brighton life, where ever I travel I always like to visit cinemas and football grounds.

Has Brighton ever attempted a drive in or open air cinema?

I remember the taxi cab radio operators asking over the air for any drivers at the Gaiety for a pick up , even though it had changed its name to the Vogue many years before and subsequently was knocked down to accommodate the new Sainsburys.

The ABC in East Street was originally the Savoy.
