Lord Bracknell
On fire
Years of working for a public authority taught me to expect nothing - "What would the Council Tax payers think?" was the philosophy.
But I do remember one Christmas Eve lunchtime, when a group of us were gathered in the pub. In walked the Chairman of the Council - who went straight to the bar with a handful of £20 notes and the magic words, "Let me buy a drink for all these hard working people".
A top man - the late Leslie Hamilton (snr).
