This. I couldnt stand the way we played, but in hindsight, with the experiences of so many promoted clubs since who have gone straight back down, I think you may be correct with this assessment. I am trying to think back to what improvements potarse had in his squad that allowed him more expansive football?
The first season was a truly impressive achievement, the second season we went backwards.

That said, the second season in the PL was beyond dour, and if we had kept playing like that, I would have preferred we were back in the Championship, but his tactics did keep us up. I remember going to the home friendly against Valencia I think. Immediately, you could see GP's different style.
But if you look at the struggle that promoted championship clubs have staying up. You have to remember the remarkable job Chris did at that time.

Bloody animal. Still the same as he was on the touchline, age hasn’t mellowed him.

100%. He did exactly what was needed, and we owe him a massive debt for it, however awful it was to watch in his final season.

I remember coming out from spurs after a 1-0 defeat in second season (very late Erickson goal after a lot of one way football) and their fans comments about how bad we were and such a crap style of play, need to go etc....

Other than Maupay, those were great signings, even Maupay was an improvement. I did read at the time that CH was lumbered with signings he didn't ask for, the DJ being one of them. I, for one, was relieved when he was sacked and fully supported TB's decision. We will never know what CH would have done with those new signings.

Fantastic in the Championship and he did what was required to stay up in the first season in the Premier League. In his final season, he sadly seemed to have lost the ability to motivate the players. The 5-0 (could have been ten) v Bournemouth was absolutely shocking. I am not totally in the 'we were absolutely awful to watch' camp, as it wasn't all dull and we did have some great moments (that Izquierdo goal v Stoke comes to mind), but it was clear that TB wanted a more progressive style of football after those two seasons and it was time to move on.
