Didn't Kurt Nogan take an age to score his first goal, and then he couldn't stop.

He did. Probably not as long as it seemed at the time, but certainly for 5 or 6 games Nogan looked shit and Kennedy kept scoring - and then it all turned around. But this was the pre-internet days, we just had Argus reports and chats with our mates in the pub. The manager showed faith and Nogan started scoring. It seems very different now.

I actually think Holroyd COULD be better than Barnes if he a) was played upfront with Murray and not out wide, and b) Got his confidence up.

Makes intelligent runs and has good raw pace.

His main problem is in the box, the problem being that he's scared to go in it for some reason. With that in mind, he hasn't looked a threat at all.

In deeper positions he actually looks quite good, he's comfortable on the ball (I'm guessing a big reason that Poyet likes him) picks a good pass and rarely gives it away.

It hasn't helped his cause being put up front on his own last season, he just wasn't ready or capable. I still think he could offer something playing off Murray or Barnes, but his confidence seems to be so shot now, it'll be hard for him to recover.
That pretty much sums up my views on him as a player.

Can't quite understand why he is the subject of SO much debate on here, it's quite odd to be honest. It's hardly as though the success of our season is resting on HIS shoulders - by the end of August he'll most likely be our 4th choice striker. Now bearing in mind we play the 4-5-1 formation, that's a long way off the first team. Gus has taken a punt on a striker who scored a decent amount of goals in the conference, he may prove to be a success, he most probably won't (as with most players who jump up two divisions), but quite why people need to decide right here, right now whether he's up to it or not (with repeated slagging sessions) I can't understand.

It's not as if we had all this with Jake Wright last season, who made the same jump up from the conference and never really impressed playing a role he wasn't entirely used to (much like Holroyd).

This ^. Absolutely spot on, but cant see him getting a good run of games up front in a 4-4-2.

Anyway, I still think Holroyd will come good, as long as everyone gets off his back. I'm sure he's got enough issues with this himself, doubting whether he can step up to this level etc. Gus clearly sees enough in him that he survived the striker cull this summer, and he is probably doing all he can to ensure the lad stays confident in his own ability. Let's not keep undoing Gus's hard work by continually slating the lad.

C'mon Chris, I'm behind you!
I echo this

One of the reasons Davies failed was that his confidence was destroyed by not scoring and this was fuelled by fans slagging him off....... A self fulfilling prophecy, the more he was criticised the more his self belief was hurt and the less likely he was to score until he had to leave at a financial loss to the club if nothing else.
Hey folks, result! Let's see if we can do it again with Holroyd! After all supporting a young lad who clearly has some talent to make his way in football and who just might (with support) prove a winner for our club would just be too tiresome! I know we live in an age of instant result but try cutting him some slack. If the same criteria had been applied to us in the workplace when we started out how many of us would have stayed in a job?
Fans expressing opinions in conversation/on the internet never destroyed anyone. It's stupid to suggest that it does. Fans booing Davies at Milton Keynes was not something I approved of or would do, and I'm sure it wasn't very nice for him, but the real reason he failed is because he had toblerone shaped feet, and after Adams was sacked we had two managers that didn't rate him. Not because some people on the internet ventured to suggest he might not be very good.
