So what went wrong?

For me its the fact they stack players in the wrong postions, They have all the wingers needed for 4 clubs but yet have one decent striker (Who along with Lampard no shows for big games)and no cover at the back which costs them.

They lost the Premiership because they had to play the best midfielder in England in the back four and they suffered the same fate last night because of the same thing.

I cant help think that 30 million spent on Sheva could hvae been better spent on a CB

Who cares what went wrong? I'm just happy that it did.

Their 'unprecedented quadruple' is in tatters this morning and thank goodness for that. Can you imagine how unbearable their fans and new found hangers-on would have been had they achieved it?

To true, nobody really knows what position they are playing in. This whole 4-3-3 isn't really working for them.

This season has shown how thin their squad is....

What went wrong is that a Russian Billionaire apponted a little Portuguese gobshite, who wound everyone up and thought that having the deepest pockets made you the best.

Guess again "special needs one"

Next year he will be managing another moneybags outfit somewhere else, and he still won't be able to say he was the best in Europe.

:shit:

Mourinho is too cautious. He had the players to score a goal he just chose to play the European way in an English cup game in Europe. Blame lies squarely with his negative style of football, where one goal will always be enough. So pleased his drab thuggish team are out

That is spot and massively on. Not imagination and no invention.

They only scored one of their penalties, whereas Liverpool scored all of theirs.

But they spent money on a centre back... they bought in Boulharouz (sp.) for about £7.5m at the start of the season. But he's fallen into the Mourinho 'bad buys' section, and now seems to have no future at the club... on sat he was on the bench, yet when Carvalho was injured, then bought on Lampard and put Essien at centre back, rather than bring him in.

But yes, I agree that their failing has been down to the decision to play Essien at centre back. They've badly missed his drive and the last 3 games I can think of that he's played there (vs Liverpool last night, and Bolton and Newcastle in the league) they've drawn 2 and lost 1.

So was he the 'best in Europe' when he won it with f*** all money at Porto?

Chelsea losing was great news. Just goes to prove that money does not always buy success.

You are so right.

Great work by Liverpool, getting Reina, Alonso, Kuyt, Crouch, Bellamy, Agger, Pennant, Riise, Zenden and Gonzales in on frees.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I suppose it showed the extreme loss of Essien in midfield to have to play him professionally at the back. He's not the most creative player in the history of football, but his energy seems unrivalled, and rare drives forward create space for easy riders like Lampard. In his stead were the steady, but forgettable dogsbodies of Makalele and Mikel.

Great moments of Drogba dives last night, him holding his head for 5 forlorn minutes after a plastic white tomato struck it in the eye.
"Gunshot wound to the back of the head." i rapped to myself.

I know this debate has been had before (up and down the land) but surely you see the difference between money that Liverpool spend and money that Chelsea spend? Not just in the scale of the purchases either.

Chelsea's money is dirty money that has come from their owner, who took it away from the people of Russia because he saw and took advantage of fledgling laws in post-Gorbachov Russia.

Liverpools' money (at least up until this point) has come from incomes gained through being a large successful club over a period of decades. And even subsequent funds will be an 'investment' from the new owners, who will look to see some return from the money they invest. Abramovich is quite happy to pump money into Chelsea with little chance of seeing much of it back.

I agree, Dont get me wrong I am not a Chelsea fan but it seems that the press seem to forget the vast amounts of money that UTD and Liverpool have spent and just focus on Chelsea.

I mean its not like Either of those two clubs have been taken over by billionares is it?
