Cheap to run cars

I am getting around 25mpg in my 1.8 focus which is costing me far too much money to run. So I am going to get rid and buy a new car. I want something for around £500 that is going to be upwards of 35mpg. Any suggestions?

I'm guessing you'll be after a 1.0 corsa or similar, unfortunately the small car market is very competitive at the moment so £500 won't get you much car!!

100% genuine offer this mate.

I have a 1.7 SXI DTI Corsa that gets between 50 - 70mpg depending on how you drive it that you can have FOR FREE!

Only thing is it needs a new Alternator (which is about £250 if fitted at a garage) and therefore it doesn't start. Also the paintwork is faded (as it is red) but honestly if you come and get it the car is yours.

I am only gonna scrap it otherwise. Great runner and superb mileage, its jut the alternator and I cannot be bothered to get it fixed as I ride my motorbike and only use the car once a month at a push.

Interested?

I call it a motorbike - sold my Citroen C4 Coupe a couple of weeks ago in favour of a 1999 Vespa ET4, £150 insurance p/a vs. £500; £10 petrol every two weeks vs. £60; £16 tax p/a vs. (c) £260. A no brainer, really. I know it's not for everyone and I'll probably return to the car market in the winter but it's ideal for now and jaw-droppingly cheap.

I did the same for a cheap run around. I chose a T reg 1 litre petrol Nissan Micra. It gets me to work and back and is the most reliable car I have ever had. Tax is reasonably cheap, servicing cheap and like I said it rarely goes wrong. MPG is around the 40 mpg mark. British made, so parts are easy and cheap to come by.

It has done over 100,000 miles and is still going strong. I looked at Corsa etc, but I was thinking of reliability as well as MPG and you cant beat a Jap car (even if built in Britain) I'm sure you can pick up a cheap one for around £500

do you only drive in town or something? 25mpg is poor for a 1.8 in mixed or A road travel. i'd look to get something fixed before shelling out £500 on something that could be a pup.
