Charlton secure Murphy deal


Charlton have signed Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy for £2.5m on a four-year contract.
Addicks boss Alan Curbishley stepped in to sign Murphy after a proposed move to Tottenham broke down.

Curbishley said: "We've been tracking Danny for some time but he only became available last week.

"Although he was publicly linked with other clubs we were always confident we would sign Danny," Curbishley told Charlton's official website.

We have remained patient and stayed focused on bringing in the type and quality of player we have always felt we need

The Charlton boss added: "The fact he has chosen to come here over a number of other Premiership clubs is an endorsement of what we are trying to achieve at Charlton.

"I also believe the fact that Charlton have signed an England international from one of this country's biggest clubs shows our tactics in the transfer market are paying off.

"We have remained patient and stayed focused on bringing in the type and quality of player we have always felt we needed."

Murphy backed out of a move to Spurs when new boss Jacques Santini refused to guarantee him a first-team place.
