Charlton youth ban coloured boots
Charlton Athletic's youngsters will not be allowed to wear coloured boots until they have reached the first team squad.

Addicks midfielder Lloyd Sam sports canary yellow boots, while Kyel Reid and Therry Racon have both worn red boots for Charlton.

But academy players wanting to follow suit can think again according to development manager Damien Matthew.

He told BBC Radio Kent: "People might say they've gone old fashioned but it's going back to that discipline."

He continued: "If you make it as a professional that's the reward you get but until then we have that little bit of control over you.

"Manchester United only allow their young players to wear black and white boots. You never want to prevent any player showing that they are creative, but it is that discipline that I alluded to.

"But we don't have too many problems with them at Charlton.

"The message from (academy manager) Steve Gritt is to go back to basics. There is also a safety issue.

"These boots are so light and you only need one kick and as we have seen these metatarsal injuries have become very fashionable, and these black and white, and padded boots give so much more protection."

Matthew joked: "Lloyd Sam plays in these yellow boots but that's why he didn't score that many goals, he was too easily seen."

Barrel of Fun

Abort, retry, fail
I thought white was the complete spectrum of all colours therefore a definite colour. So they have only banned certain colours.

I agree with the premise though. David James was talking about a fair amount of youth players that rock up to training with their coloured boots, diamond earrings and so on, assuming they have already made it.

What a great call!

Anyone wearing muli-coloured boots deserves to be kicked around the park for 90mins!

Anyone who wears coloured boots against me just gets kicked whenever he gets the ball! Completely deserved.
