Championship Manager 4 - Any tips?

I've recently started playing Championship Manager for the first time and find it pretty tricky. I got the sack by Feb on my first three efforts!

I am now 4th in the table in November with the mighty stripes, but worried it will all turn to shit and i will have to take a hammer to the CD-ROM.

Does anyone have any top tips?

Advice on signing players would be useful. Butters is languishing in my resrves and Cullip is my only decent centre half. How should I go about finding a decent centre half to sign? The filters thing is confusing on player search and I just don't know where to start.

Any tips on good formations also useful.
