Also if they are flushing it in a day they are doing a shit job. Flush it, run for a couple of weeks with cleaner/sludge remover in, flush again and refill with inhibitor added.

I should be a plumber.

Are you a qualified plumber, or just talking bollocks ?

A decent plumber with a decent power flusher (and knowledge of how to use it properly) will easily complete a house of up to say 15 rads in a day, and the results will be visible for all to see, and feel.

Only the very worst (and quite rare) type of blockage or sludged up system will require a call back by leaving a chemical in. In that instance, it's likely an offending radiator needs replacing anyway.

In all instances, a filter/magnet should be retro fitted to the system, to keep the system in top condition.

To OP - I have a very good power flusher based in BN2. PM on way.

If you have a mate who's good at d.i.y its not a difficult job, just time consuming.Turn off the water attach a hose to the drain valve drain the system, bleed the radiators as the water drops, once drained put chemicals in tank turn on the water(making sure all valves are closed)bleed radiators as system fills.Cost, some beers for your mate and the cost of chemicals, change from £50.Make sure you are putting the chemicals in the correct tank.Try this before paying for a power flush.

I need a bit of NSC advice/assistance.

Just been told by British Gas that my central heating system is blocked and that it needs flushing. They can do it but it’s a day’s job and would cost £700! However, they could probably do it next week or early the week after which is something at least! My other alternative is to look at a new boiler etc as mine is quite old and inefficient but this would obviously cost a lot more than £700. I’ve asked them for a quote for the boiler just in case and at least it gives me a starting point although I know British Gas are usually expensive.

So, can NSC recommend any central heating engineers in the Mid Sussex area that are good, won’t cost as much as British Gas and are likely to be available for either the flush or the new boiler in the not too distant future?!
We can do it for £350,
however can't fit it in for at least a couple of weeks.
usually takes a day and the machine will the clean and flush the system pipework and each radiator individually. The chemicals added will break down all the sludge and remove it.

pm me if want us to take a look.

Its all great adding chemicals to the system. but what happens when you don't neutralise it afterwards properly and the chemicals start to eat through the rads and the pipe-work?

fair point - that's a non-power flushing method i've described. believe in being gentle ;)

There is something a bit fishy here.

Installing a new boiler will not remedy any sludge or blockages in the radiators. So, ensure that the price you are given for installation also includes a power flush and make sure it is clear who pays for any leaks that could appear as a result of that flush (this is quite common).
