I can see why people may be disappointed but I think it had all the elements of the great Bond films: Close quarter combat, exotic locales (made to look a bit seedy), a rugged Bond, just enough hi-tec gadgetry to be realistic plus a step back with M getting to know Bond, Bond getting to learn his craft as a 00 agent and, on second viewing, enough space in th eplot for the audience to watch Bond getting to grips with himself.

Not the perfect film (It's never going to be a cinematic masterpiece being a Bond film) but I thought it took elements of the novels, the tougher Bond (Dalton), and elements of Bond being more human and made a great Bond film.

But I can see why it is not to everyones' taste.

I prefered the Bourne movies. All them little quips with bond just dont work for me.

at home
I watched it for the first time last night and I am not really sure what I felt about it.

Yes it was more gritty than previous Bonds, but one of the things that I thought was strange is that people said by watching it, you would see why Bond was so anti-women.......that he fell in Love with her and when she died, his humanity died with her.....BUT he fell in love and married Dianna Rigg in OHMSS, killed by Smersch at the end ( remember the song - we have all the time in the world)

I also stuggled with the concept of the timing....Bond got his 00 status in the sixties/seventies ( when the films were made) and the book "casino royale" was based in the 60's however this film was based very much in the 21st Century ( the new Aston martin, sub machine guns etc) Felix Lighter was black in the film, but white in every other film!

having said all that , it was a jolly good romp, the Bond girl was very fit, and the story very good ( although I thought the film lost its way in the last 1/3.

6/10

I think as films the Bourne movies work better but as you know, I am a bit of a Bond geekamatron so I watched it as a Bond movie rather than a particularaly objective viewpoint and for me it worked.

Liked it overall but being a purist I didn't like the lack of Q, Moneypenny and the gun barrel sequence.

Also watch Daniel Craig closely - he walks like a hunchback.

Overtraining.

I think its a shame Pierce Brosnan didnt get a film like this - think he would have done well.

Or Octopussy. I love Roger Moore as Bond, especially in Moonraker, but no person ever deserved the indignity of that awful clown outfit. Pitiful.

Dave, Casino Royale was set in the 1950's (well the book anyway), it was published in 1953.

I did quite like the film, especially the fact it dumped a lot of the gadgets etc. They did vaguely stick to the book (in so much as they could bearing in mind in it is 50 odd years old), until the end where they had to change it so they could do a sequel.

Also Daniel Craig did play Bond more like the Fleming character than anyone other than Dalton has done.

Bond films are pretty naff whatever. Had high hopes for this one but despite a promising beginning it was the same old same old again.

I think Bond films get away with a lot 'cos of people like me who, although I like a good film, seems to forget all judgement with Bond and just like them whatever.

I can understand that. Porn films are poorly scripted, budgeted and acted but I still enjoy them.

Have you ever been able to not touch yourself when Kiel/Jaws is on his way to violently metalcock-pummelling that delirious, begoggled nerdovirgin with the bunches of hair shooting from each side of her tight scalp?

Saw it on the plane out to Atlanta the other week (not the best place to review a film) and I thought it was the best Bond film in AGES!

The lack of Q and the moneypenny CHEESEFEST added so much!
