..." We know a fair bit about Brighton anyway, but Joe has given us a couple of indicators of what they are like. What he has said is that they have not had terrific performances at home and that the crowd do get onto them and on their backs if they don't start well.

" So what we want to try to do is get off to a really good start in the game and put them on the back-foot. Then hopefully the crowd will give them a little bit of stick and put them under a bit of extra pressure. So we will be looking to start the game very well tomorrow. "

Using the Withdean faithful against their own team!!!

Sneaky bastards.

OR how about the wankers that get on the teams back take note that not only does booing the team make them play worse but it also helps the opposition.

Booing the team is such a great idea. :wozza: :tosser:

Thats not directed at you glasfyn as I have no idea whether you get on the teams back or not.

0-2 after 28 mins and Withdean going MENTAL. Gameplan working perfectly I would say.

How about the team, and micky give us a reason not to boo?

Vicious circle isn't it. You can't play football properly when you are worried about making mistakes. As soon as our players make a mistake the numb nuts in the crowd get on their back, it's no wonder we play badly at home.

Yeah, Micky has to take some of the blame but the the ones that boo the players and get on their backs are just a big a reason for us doing so poorly.

I think you overstate the effect. The booing didn't kick in until a big run of poor performances.

The players should go all out and if they get booed it should be because they screw up, not because they were too scared to try.

(I don't boo, as a kid I was conditioned by my embarrassed brother into not making much noise beyond cheering our goals, but I will always argue fans have a right, verging on an obligation, to boo, because it can often have a positive effect - see matt richards' performance against man city after he was booed off the pitch against wallsall, see the way guy butters turned his albion career around - a significant number of times booing spurs players on to put more effort in)

I totally agree, a few weeks ago i went on to a Huddersfield fans forum and there was a topic about the Brighton game and how the fans at Brighton turn on the team so quickly. I've thought this myself but to hear it from an ex- player and other fans says alot.

Brighton (home) fans are probably the worst in the country. A lot of us should be ashamed of ourselves and if the Carlisle manager can see it why can't a lot of the people on here. That said, we have been served a hell of a lot of tactictally inept, woeful and dull games in the last couple of years (including a hell of a lot under Wilkins for those with short memories). As the man said, vicious circle but bottom line is we don't help the situation and, as fans, helping the team to improve is exactly what we should be doing. As a frustrated season ticket holder however I'm just as guilty as the next man.

Have any of you ever heard or read an interview with a manager before? They ALWAYS say that the aim at away games is to quiet the crowd and get them on the team's back.

The atmosphere is not great and never has been, but where I sit at least it's not like the players get loads of abuse or boos.

I love this argument, don't get on the players backs and we will win games. So it is the fans fault we are where we are?

I remember last season at home to Millwall, we were leading 1-0 at half time. The Millwall players approached the dressing room to the worst fans verbal attack I have ever heard from visiting fans. Millwall were terrible in that half and the fans really let them know their feelings.
Second half Millwall players respond and play us off the park, result 1-2 Millwall.
Don't tell me that letting players know how you feel about their performance always has an adverse effect. Millwall certainly responded.

No one is saying it's the fans fault but if you are seriously arguing that we at Withdean actually help the team in any way when we are struggling then I'm afraid I disagree 100%. At our best we can be the 12th man but 90% of the time we only help our opponents with our negativity but no, we can't be blamed for the odd team selections, playing players out of position or making ridiculous tactical decisions.

I notice you did not respond to my Millwall comparison?

I hate this attitude. We do not abuse our players during games any more than any other team.

We do however struggle to build up an atmosphere. We have lost to teams at Withers who have about 100 away fans making 0 noise. Should that mean they shouldn't try? No it makes very little difference.

We are shit cos of micky and his non-leagu coaching staff not because of the fans:censored:

I do take your point about Millwall and it's something we'll never know - did the abuse the players took on that day help them or was it the team talk or a change of tactics or a combination? But I still say, as a general rule, getting on the players backs during the game rarely if ever helps. In fact at Withdean (and as a few posters have pointed out at most grounds) you can see the fear overcoming players. No one wants to hold on to the ball for more than 2 seconds for fear of being the next target of boo boys. And I'm probably just as guilty cos watching this mob is so f***ing frustrating and yep, I'm as fickle as the next man too - if we had somehow managed to score 3 goals in the last 10 minutes standing ovation, the previous 80 minutes wiped from my memory and Adams the hero!!

Is it a coincidence that in recent seasons as dissent at home has increased our home form has dropped and our away form improved?
