Our hot debate at work today is about corporal punishment. Who went to a school where they had it? Who actually got caned or strapped? And what was the attitude of the pupils? At my school, it was almost seen as a badge of honour cos it was quite rare, but at my colleague's school the strap was used willy-nilly and terrified the pupils (which included one Andy 'Mad dog' Kennedy).

I got strapped a couple of times and I don't think it affected me badly but I'm glad it's been abolished. No place in an education system.

Anyone else got bad memories?

The strap used to be standard in Scottish schools. Maybe still is for all I know. 'Strap' was a bit of a misnomer tho, cos it was more like a massive strip of beef jerky, and was about as strap-like as a length of piping. Criminal to hit kids with something like that.

There was a cane at my Junior school (St Nicholas in Portslade) and I can remember a boy having two strokes of it in front of the class.
I did play truant and was terrified I was going to get caned but I didn't. In fact the girls punishment was a slipper but I don't recall anybody getting hit with a slipper.

We also had the cane at Hove County Grammar girls school but I don't remember anybody getting caned at all.

When I was at Glebe Middle School in Southwick/Shoreham it was the SLIPPER! Very rarely used although did see someone get whacked one, think they stopped it whilst I was there due to a parents complaint.

At Varndean they were more into psychological torture. I remember one boy was locked in a cupboard for an afternoon - it's hard to believe now.

Got the cane on two separate occasions when at Patcham Fawcett..

As any old 'Fawcett' boys will recall, there was a green and playground opposite the school by Carden Hill, and a fit IBM chick used to walk by us every lunchtime. A group of us used to be a bit cheeky and wolf whistle at her, and throw in some saucy comments about her potential for making men of us..

Imagine our luck some days later, when she came past us with another fit mate..well the comments flew about thick and fast ...until fit mate flashed her I.D at us and arrested us on the spot..
There followed 3 strokes of the cane for all of us by the P.E teacher, who jumped off a chair whilst doing it just to get a bit more down force..
It was like something out a film, where we all had to do the 'walk of shame' acrosss the silent empty courtyard with other puplis looking down in mixture respect and sorrow..
Now THAT really hurt...

And the second time..

We had a period of time where it was cool to bring in your personal choice of schoolboy arsenal.....be it 'Black Widow' Catapults or Air Pistols..

One break, we thought it was very cool to take pot shots at some 4th and 5th year dweebs, and I scored highly for 'taking out' another pupil (who happened to be climbing a tree at the time) with my 'Black Widow' and some liberated (from Chemistry Class) Magnesium Sulphate ball bearings..

Clearly got really done for that too, and just escaped being hung drawn and quartered..

In reply to your question - no bad memories, we knew the consequences, and bad as they were at the time, it was prefferable to getting chucked out and being made to go to Falmer..

IMO, It's withdraw it helped signal the the start of whats become rebelious little wankers that have no respect for the older generation, and like to spit in the street..

*God listen to me...I must be getting on...*

In primary school you were made stand on your chair and then got the ruler across the back of the knees. In those days boys wore short trousers so they didn't have the luxury of not having the ruler directly onto the skin.
:nono: :nono: :nono: :nono: :nono:

In Cottesmore which is now Cardinel Newman they used the strap but only on the boys. Don't remember anything being used on the girls except getting detention.

When Cottesmore did amalgamate can only remember detention being the only form of punishment but can clearly remember a nun who made everyone's life a misery.

Bad as things were I feel that as long as the threat was there you stayed out of trouble where at all possible.

...apparently full of pedantic spell checkers that's what...! ;)

Falmer was also the school that we used to fight against..hardly a good thing to then 'get transfered' the other side is it...?

Odd that now it's the equivalent of the 'Holy Grail' and can't wait to go there..

St John the Baptist primary school there was ruler, strap and cane. Different teachers had their own preferences, but only the head had the cane. I got it for flicking peas across the table "don't you know there's starving .....etc".

The ruler was on the back on the leg, sock rolled down and whack. Strap on the hand. The teacher was so old and senile by the time the strap got to your hand she'd run out of puff.

And we did boxing for PE. A big box of boxing gloves came out, pair up with someone the same height and start fighting.

De La Salle - Mike Smith said he advertised dunlop. He would attempt to leave the imprint on the sole of his Green Flash on your arse. Don't get be started on Sadek. He was a sadist and should have been sent back to Cairo.

If it was still allowed these days a lot of pupils would hit back.

When I was at school I got suspended once, and got put in isolation for a day-which was great fun-I got to sit in the headmasters luxurious office and do bugger all work.

That's what I said originally. It was counter-productive as some kids got instant cred

It was bad but now it has gone too much the other way.

Teachers cannot even clean up kids who come to school teeming in nits because it is classed as assault. Nitty Nora isn't allowed to comb through to look for them.
