..... give me the low-down for i-pods (models, best place to buy from) and whether I need i-tunes and what format that uses, and what format options I have etc etc

Our two cool teen dudes want i-pods so your experience, rather than the sales pitch would be appreciated.

My advice would be to buy from the Apple Store , particularly as new models have just been brought out. You have 20GB for £219 or 40GB for £299, also it may well be possible to wangle student discount as they're for your kids (trying phoning the store in this case). iTunes synchronises perfectly with iPods and comes with them; works with Macs and PCs (also gives access to the iTunes music store which is GREAT!). iPods use MP3s and also AAC which is like MP3 but with better compression, those are your two main format options really and both work fine in my experience

itunes will work on windows, and comes packaged up with the beast - i think you need XP, and the beefier the PC the better (although it runs OK albeit slowly on my old laptop). As for where to buy, no idea. Mine came from Malaysia.

I'd agree - you'll want the new 4th gen. and nowhere safer to buy from than Apple themselves. There's not going to be much discounting going on, as ever, unfortunately.

I'd go for 40gb because - well - why not?

I'd disagree on the discounting; Apple have a dedicated Education store for students and teachers which I got discount off when buying my laptop, bearing in mind that I was 17 and only at sixth form at the time. I guess it depends on age really, if I were still at school I probably wouldn't have been able to get anything off. For university students it will be farily straightforward as the NUS have some kind of link-up with Apple I believe

Sorry - the Apple education discount is quite widely known about.

What I meant was other retailers are not going to be able to enter much of a price-war on iPods - the variance in price is going to be nowhere near to that you witness on most other electronic products.
