Should be bloody easy for them now with VAR , but they’ve got even bigger fools checking that.

The problem is VAR was introduced due to incompetent referees and the decision that they made, VAR will always be correct but it's still those incompetent referees and the people setting the rules making the decisions.

Set out the rules clearly, set the guidance for off side and retrain the referees not only on the rules but in there fitness.

Unfortunately young referees coming up through the leagues are not supported by the FA, as such good talented refs leave the game. Until young refs are protected from the abuse that they receive as they are coming up through the leagues (park / youth football) I doubt that would change. No doubt it has improved but there are still plenty of stories about the ref being berated by some upset parent.

Top flight refs:
Nobody will ever agree with all their decisions and over 90 mins players will make plenty of poor decisions and mistakes. Refs are no different. BUT there is no excuse for them being physically unfit. The condition of some of them is, frankly, a disgrace.

Grass roots refs:
A thankless task with shitty park players who think they are PL players - giving it the big one to amateur refs. No wonder fewer and fewer people want to ref non-league these days and the players get the officials they deserve. Won’t be long before there won’t be sufficient refs to get a game on and the players and coaches will have nobody to blame but themselves. It’s not a sport I enjoy but rugby doesn’t seem to have the same problem.

At the top end, Premier League referees are salaried so they get paid a regular wage with match fees on top of that. Referees in the top-flight of England can earn as much as £70,000 per year. They are paid a basic yearly retainer of between £38,500 and £42,000 based on experience, and then are paid £1,150 per match on top of that.

Top Champions League referees get £5500 per game.

Brother of one of my former staff was getting 5k per match for Europa League 10 years ago.........

So it seems like the ‘career path’ for refs too out of condition and incompetent to ref actual games now is to become a full time VAR.

We’re doomed
