[Football] Can both England and Wales progress to the knockout stages?

I've read the permutations for each team still possibly getting out of Group B and also looking at the table it seems possible that both teams can progress.

Wales win by 3 vs England and the USA and Iran have a low scoring match i.e. 1-0, 0-1 or 1-1 or 2-0 Iran I think.

If we end up on equal GD as USA (if they win) then how are the teams divided?

PS - not actually bothered about what happens but the many scenarios are interesting and also likely to change as the matches play out.

I heard this on TV at some point earlier today...

1. Goal difference
2. Goals scored
3. Result of the game between the two sides

(Not sure what comes after that, if required)

I think fair play comes in somewhere?

Unbelievably I think I read that they draw it out of a hat!

The ranking of teams in the group stage is determined as follows:
  1. Points obtained in all group matches:
    • Win: 3 points;
    • Draw: 1 point;
    • Loss: 0 points;
  2. Goal difference in all group matches;
  3. Number of goals scored in all group matches;
  4. Points obtained in the matches played between the teams in question;
  5. Goal difference in the matches played between the teams in question;
  6. Number of goals scored in the matches played between the teams in question;
  7. Fair play points in all group matches (only one deduction can be applied to a player in a single match):
    • Yellow card: −1 point;
    • Indirect red card (second yellow card): −3 points;
    • Direct red card: −4 points;
    • Yellow card and direct red card: −5 points;
  8. Drawing of lots.
Netherlands are actually higher than Ecuador on FairPlay points in Group A.

If Iran or USA win there is no way England and Wales can both qualify, Iran win and they have 6 points, USA win and they have 5 points. It's impossible for both England and Wales to match either of those points total.

Iran and USA would need to draw and then a Wales win would give them the same number of points as both us and Iran but a better goal difference than Iran. In that scenario we would both go through, unless Wales win by 6 or more goals and wipe out our GD advantage over Iran

Many forget that the drawing of lots was used to determine final positions in England's World Cup group as 'recently' as 1990.

* Only to decide between 2nd and 3rd, and both teams (Ireland and Netherlands) had qualified anyway.

I honestly have zero recollection of that - in fact I don't remember the group stage for England at all in 1990.

I was 18 so I will blame the discovery of alcohol on my memory!!

Thanks for posting - unbelievable that Blatter was involved in FIFA as long ago as 1975!

The only way Wales can stop England is by winning by 4 and qualifying themselves. Has Moore got his priorities a bit cockeyed, or is he just a bit dim?

Mathematically both teams can go through - in the same way that mathematically Brighton (or, say, Fuham or Brentford) can win the PL this season.

......and about as likely IMHO.

Go back to having a play-off, like England had (and lost) in 1958?
