.. does anyone know what it means.
Coming down Southwater by pass saw 2 cameras signed like this, not the yellow box type but sneaky unmarked small ones on bridges.
Annoyingly I know I went past one at over the 70 limit.
I know, shouldn't have done it but are they actually in use?:glare:

Probably working!
Camera on test implies that they are seeing if it would make enough money to justify it! So you should be fine.
But let's not start an endless thread on speed cameras!

Spotted those yesterday courtesy of the warning signs - are they for speeding, if so they are far less obvious than the GATSO jobbies?

Or just for surveillance?

Either way they are quite sneaky being sited on a curve just after a long downhill straight. Think there was another under bridge back at the Horsham end of the Southwater bypass?

They don't put signs up for the ANPR ones, if that's what you mean. Rather self defeating if they did.

I read somewhere, cant remember where it was, but the APNR cameras will be able to read and identify something like 8,000 cars a minute.so anybody who drives past one without MO0T, Insurance or Tax will have a ticket issued automatically and not be reliant on plod in a car to stop any offenders.

These cameras will be a lot better reducing road crime than speed cameras are!

They don't. Too many variables or mitigating circumstances.

They are Average Speed Cameras that are on test to gain type approval. They were installed during November last year at which time the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (who control speed cameras etc in Sussex) posted this on their website:

Average speed cameras are currently being installed on the A24 at Southwater.

The installation forms part of a trial on behalf of the Home Office and ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers).

Ken Seymour, Manager of the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, said: “The cameras will be monitored, but motorists will not be prosecuted if they stray over the speed limit.

“Testing new technologies is vital for the Home Office Type Approval system, without which no cameras can be used on our roads.”

The cameras will be clearly marked with ‘on test’ signage.
