Just out of interest Tyrone. As you and Badfish are both from Geelong. Do you know each other?

Oh, and I went to Oz 3 years ago. It was great. I am too old now to emigrate (plus I quite like the Amex). Go for it Woodchip. You are only young once.

No i've not met any other Albion fans in Geelong. There's another poster Viney who's also a Geelong resident.

Must be something about living by the sea and the presence of seagulls that draws them to her.

I recently received my residents visa to live in South Australia after a 4 year slog to get the right qualifications and experience. There have been radical changes to the immigration system mainly in the amount of occupations you can now apply under. Forget websites/agency's that let you determine whether you think you might have enough points as the process is far more complex than that. I would suggest contacting an agent (GoMatilda have a good reputation) and get some good advice on whether you are at present elligible or need to work towards certain qualifications/experience etc as before you can even apply you have to be skill assessed and gain a certificate for that. You might then need to apply for state sponsorship depending on where you want to go or where your job might allow you to go, again before you can process an application.
I did the entire process myself but looking back a migration agent would have saved me a lot of hassle but cost me about £4000 (which I think includes skill assessment fees, state sponsorship fees and DIAC application fees which is around £2000). Perstistance is the key though and I got there in the end, hoping to move out in Feb/March time. Loads of info and help on Pomsinoz website, I got loads of info from there that helped me weave through what is a real maze! Hope all this helps and good luck!

alofbrighton - Where in SA are you moving to? I am just outside Adelaide (Mount Barker) and have been here for nearly a year. Always interested in anybody else coming out here. I presume from your post you are state sponsored so have a job sorted. Get in touch (PM) if you need any help or info etc (although you may already be sorted).

OP - It's a great place to live, but you (like myself) have missed the gravy train from the UK. House prices are similar, e.g. if you want a house with a pool by the beach, think of what that would cost you in the UK and it is about the same here. Cost of living is about the same with many pluses and minuses. IT (Test Analyst - if that is the field I am thinking of), contract work is a good starting point, but most IT is in Melbourne and Sydney. In Adelaide for example, everybody knows everybody in a particular field and it is tough to get in. Once you are in though, you are fine.

I lved in Oz for 7 years during the 80s, mainly in Melbourne which is a great city very European & cosmopolitan.
My advice to anyone emigrating there, would be to take a look at some of the large coastal towns, the house prices won't be as steep as the 5 major cities, plus your feel as though you really have made a change of lifestyle.

Had a holiday during new year in Coffs Harbour a few years ago & loved it, fantastic beaches to the north of the town & hardly anyone there.
Would be there now if it wasn't for my son's schooling.

The three of you should meet up. You could start up Seagulls Over Geelong. You could be the SOGS.

When I lived in Melbourne I used to play soccer for South Yarra, we played Geelong a few times they nearly always beat us.
All my time there I only met one other ex pat Albion fan, when I was in the gymn wearing my 83 cup final shirt.

I have yelled 'albion' out of my car window at him does that help? There is another in Geelong called buffalo seagull who play football with every week. Having said that though now the new season has started we should have the inaugural meeting of the Seagulls Over Geelong. How does one night next week sound tyrone?

Give over.

Geelong is a great place to live. Everything you need in life without the traffic jams.

Bloody Oath mate, Geelong is a fantastic spot, especially to bring up kids. Good schools and easy access to everything including Melbourne. And we have the best footy team (who used to be called the Seagulls!!!)

$100k will have you living quite a nice life, the average pay is about $30k-$40k. House prices are pretty much the highest they will get at the moment so I wouldn't recommend buying unless you plan on living there the rest of your life.

Will have to check if i've got a bye in basketball.

Wednesdays and Thursdays are basketball nights.

We could always make it tuesday night? Won't take us long to let all the members know. :)

Going to Adelaide next Tuesday...back Thursday lunchtime. This is harder than we thought hey? Imagine how screwed we'd be if there were four of us! Tuesday the following week would be fine though.

Yes this is a nightmare, we need to stop climbing the leagues and go back to Withdean! Maybe see how Tyrone's basketball works out. Or another night? Sunday? the only one I can't do is Wednesday.
