Clarke getting moved out in a cabinet re-shuffle is just fecking typical of this lot. This will not get referred to as a sacking, and it is clearly not a resignation.

As usual, no-one stands up and says "Systematic failings, and it's my system, therefore I must take responsibility and resign." And nor does the PM announce that a minister is being removed from office due to their inability to do the job - that would set a dangerous precedent for this government.

Nah, far better to just move him on in a re-shuffle, far easier to offer a positive spin, and most importantly of all, leabve no-one in the government actually taking any direct blame for the shambles they have overseen.

No, he's just admitted to Nick Robinson that he was sacked.

I bet that isn't the official line.

If Blair says that he was sacked due to the shambolic handling of the deportation of prisoners, then I will eat my tie.

We all know the reality, such as we were wrong about WMD and shouldn't have gone into Iraq, but reality and what Tony says are quite different things.

John Prescott remains as deputy prime minister and in his elected role as deputy leader of the Labour Party but is losing his porfolio - the 'super ministry' known as the ODPM. It covered housing, local government, regeneration, planning and urban and regional issues. It is widely speculated its duties will be split up.

Straw should get another senior role, he's even come out of the Iraq stuff with as much dignity intact as was possible under the unpleasant circumstances of Blair's blatant sabre-rattling. I think he's OK.

If it is okay to defend to defenf the indefensible - then I suppose he is okay.

That's been coming for ages. The planned break-up of the ODPM has been common-knowledge in Westminster for months. I can only hope that the reality of the situation is that the Falmer application is purely in the hands of the Solicitor General to vouch for the legality of his decision. I'm sure JP was just signing where they told him to sign by this stage.

What more do you want? The man himself has said he's been sacked. END OF.
