A similar scam was covered on bbc last night whereby scammer took a car photo from google and advertised the car from Norway. All dealt with on email and got money transferred abroad etc. guy lost a similar amount of money. Investigations resulted in it being sourced from Africa.
Lot of stuff like this about. A lot of mail distribution lists have been hacked and emails sent to unsuspecting people with requests for emergency funds from people they know.
Be careful out there.

I had a similar thing when looking at a motorhome in Gumtree. Advertised for £7k when it was worth nearer £20k and he would drive it down from Cardiff if I wanted it.

You said the car was £5,000, but how much they really go for?

Was for an 09 plate lexus, probably go between 8k-10k

Tip for the future, once a price agreed, create a new gmail account in a fake name, contact the buyer and, after making enquiries, offer £250 less. If they accept, they are a nailed on scammer.

Very good tip, all I can offer you is lousy thumbs up.

Been using ebay for years , however, I'm after a particular car and having agreed a price, this is the email I've recieved , what's your thoughts as I've never heard this done by eBay before.

Good evening Stephen,
I agree £5000.
Normally I prefer cash sales too but because I'm in France the only option to close the deal is through eBay, is safer for everyone. You'll send the money to eBay and after they confirm me that they have your money in their account, I will purchase a next day plane ticket and you can come and pick up the car from me directly or i will deliver it personally to you. Everything is covered by eBay, they will keep your money secured during the inspection period. This purchase protection guarantees that the car is exactly as I described it, you'll have 5 days to inspect it and if you decide not to keep it you will get refunded immediately. I will get paid only after you confirm that everything it's I described it.
In order to start the transaction please confirm your eBay user id, your full name and your full address so I can register the sale with eBay and proceed.

P.S. Please call me at 07917494567 only if agree my terms to close the deal through eBay, don't waste my time please (I will not answer at private number)

Thank you
Kathy

Lots of good cars available locally. I'd never buy from anyone that I couldn't go back to easily. I wouldn't buy a car without a test run either.

I have bought 3 so far on e.bay and very happy with the first two and reasonably satisfied with the third. I always pay cash on approval after test drive etc, a little inconvenient having to travel to where the vehicle is but ultimately much safer. I tend to take someone with me as back up as you really cannot be sure of anything regarding people you have never met, Personally, very happy to buy from e.bay but keep yourself safe.

Be careful of jamie'ing that person. They could be an innocent persons email account that has been compromised.

Just the sentance construction in the OP message shows it wasn't written by a native speaker.

I've sold cars on eBay, but in the classifieds section NOT as an auction.

Its always a nervous time dealing like this as you should never take a stranger as completely trustworthy.

I quite like the quote: "If a deal sounds too good to be true - it probably is."
