So come on what has really caused everyone to do a massive U-turn on Guy Butters?

I don't recall ever really laying into him personally (Awaits Dwayne to find a quote and massivly mis-interpret it). I certainly chuckled when I saw the article though. I don't think he was ever really given a first chance. He had a couple of games. Didn't do to bad. Then didn't play. He's done alright against Luton.

I still think hes shite.
And deserves to be laid into imho.
I expect more from someone whos been fleecing us for the past year.
It will take a lot more than one half decent performance against a poor 10 man side to make me change my mind.

I think hes let us down but I also think the auction thing was bang out of order and said so at the time.

I dont however blame him as much as I do Dick Knight and MH for signing him when he was clearly not fit enough.

At the end of the day it doesnt really matter who you sponsor the money goes to the club regardless and theres not many options left and Guy desrves encouragement just becasue he wears the stripes.

I would hardly say there has been a massive U turn, he was touted as apossible sponsor candidate ages ago and the idea was received fairly well.

Only saw him against Portsmouth away when he was truly dreadful..Overweight and crashing about like barge..

Didn't he give away one penalty and nearly a second..?

Beacuse I never saw him again meant I couldn't make further comment on him, but i am happy that we have 'suddenly' gained another good, experienced centre back.

Keep it up or your for the slaughter Butters..

The auction joke snowballed and when it made the national press
and BBC text it went too far.

He's now a part of the team and from what I hear did ok in the last game, as long as he earns his wages I don't think too many on here have got a problem with him. Much the same as when Kitson eventually played the fans tried to get behind him, even though he came across as a sulky little shit.

The auction was chucklesome, and a lot milder than what is said on the terraces and in fanzines week in, week out.

Butters took the mick last year with his lack of athleticism, and there was only one person responsible for this, himself. It cost him in terms of appearance fees and win bonuses etc. so he may have learned his lesson.

This season the plate is clean (well Butters is anyway). If he plays well he will get praise and vice versa

I think he could do a job in this division - lets give him a chance, after all hes costing us an arm and leg.

Get real! Didn't you hear the "Who are ya?" chants the first time he graced Withdean with his prescence? He fleeced us and we should learn from it.

Butters does not come across as having the same attitude problem as Paul unFitson

Terrace humour Dropkick, are you telling me that we weren't pleased to see Kitson play eventually? Plenty of us thought he might make the difference between relegation and staying up and
I recall that we tried to support him. Wwhatever we think about him he looked a class player, in comparison to most of the team, once he played.

Fleeced us yes, but to continue slagging off players once they are in the team and playing well is a little immature and counter productive, no?

I'm not one to slag off players, if they wear the stripes I support them, albeit to varying degrees.

In the case of Butters, I just don't feel he did enough to get himself fit. He's a professional athlete for goodness sake, and I don't think allowing yourself to get out of shape is good enough. He just didn't give us anything last season.

However, if he plays well, and helps us now, then I'll be pleased for him, and I certainly did feel for him after reading Charlie's comments.

You can only judge a player on performances and last season for whatever reason he just wasn't up to it.
On the performance he put in against Luton I don't think you can fault him. He did the job he was asked to and did it well. Maybe the drop in level suits him, maybe he's worked hard during the summer and maybe he'll be found out against quicker forwards. In the meantime he deserves our respect.

I don't agree. If it is true that he was the highest paid earner at the club then it would not be over the top to suggest he was on at least 5k a week (I believe sir bob was on that). He cost us £260,000 for three or four games. For the rest of the season we were reliant on loaners and the £40 note fund to try and save our division one status.

There is a hell of a long way to go before the plate is clean and it will take a lot longer than the one more season he is likely to be with us.

I still don't rate him as a player, but I'll give him credit when it's due. I cannot wait for Blackwell to come back into the side.
