Look, I gave the guy sum stick, and i feel bad bout it. Reading that article, I really feel for the guy. He no way deserved his kids to get abuse at school. If I go to the training ground...ill ask for his autograph. Nice one guy.

The auction on the internet was meant to be a joke. Maybe, with hindsight (it's a wonderful thing you know), it was not the best joke in the world, but Butters has himself to blame for our frustration.

He's a professional footballer. He is meant to be fit at all times (excluding injuries). If he's not, he's not doing his job. If I don't do my job, I can get sacked.

As for his performance today. He did OK as far as I'm concerned. Not outstanding, not crap, just OK. Against better opposition, I still think he would struggle due to lack of mobility. I still feel he has to lose more weight and get sharper.

Oh stop it you sanctemonious lot

Everyone without fail slagged him off last season because in our opinion he was a lazy fat bloke who was taking the club for a ride by drawing his salary for not playing.

Ok now he has got himself fit and played a good game yesterday.

He gets paid £2k + a week for 90 minutes of footballl and a few sessions training...that is over £110,000 per annum!!!! If you can get that and not take a bit of critisism then you are in the wrong job.

Would he have started a game this season if we hadn't had a desperate situation at the back ??? Charlie can say what he likes but I don't think Butters has ever been flavour of the month at the Albion. Have nothing against him but do feel he was a poor buy. Also my understanding is that Butters has a recent history of being hard to get rid off once his feet are under the table (no pun intended) at a club ala Gillingham.

Yes it was nice to see him add a long overdue something to our lack of options at the back, even if Pethick had to do any/all running for him. Not going overboard about his performance though like the media/players seem to have done. Did his job in the air (once he got going) and some nice interceptions.

It's all pathetic...it's just a game after all!!!
Football would be better all round if we all remembered that from time to time.

I said at the time that the Internet auction was disgraceful and disgusting and the players would just think we were ALL a bunch of moaning wankers. Save the abuse for opposition players not ours, Charlie's comments about so-called Albion 'fans' are spot-on.

The amount he earns is completely irrelevant - he's one of ours.

Sorry if that makes me a sanctimonious git Dave.

Doesn't make you sanctimonious at all, fairly held point of view. But I thought Safeway got it spot on about Charlie, his comments were just a bit stupid. They are clearly Brighton fans, or they wouldn't give a shit their club was being effectively ripped off by an overpaid passenger. But hopefully thats all in the past now, and the boy Butters has realised what it means to be an Albion player for our fans. It isn't just a pay cheque.

Fair enough for Oatway to complain about the stick Butters' kids got, none of us ever thought it would go that far.

But for Charlie to describe Guy as "the ultimate professional"?

Come on Chaz, I agree we may have been too harsh, but that's taking dressing room loyalty a bit far.

If he was the "ultimate professional", he would never have had the fans on his back in the first place, whether he was in the first team or the reserves.

Lets get one thing straight. If we want to slag players off we can, the reason is because we pay their wages. If you went to the cinema and a leading actor in a film was crap you would rightly slag him off, the same is true at Football but the fact is sometimes lost in the club loyalty issue. Now whether that is productive or not is another issue. In the case of Butters we will never know if the Sun article gave him a kick up the backside or demotivated him, I'd imagine the later. I for one would never slag any of the players off during a game but like everyone else chuckled about the Internet auction and thought it had gone too far when it hit the Sun - However, who was to know that any self respecting journo would print such a non story about a 2nd division club. As an earlier poster said Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Oatway is sticking up for his mate and good for him - its shows the team is together despite (I'm guessing here) some jealousy in the ranks regarding Guy's salary. However, I'm not sure I agree with a lot of these comments. Firstly, Oatway describes Butters as the 'ultimate professional' . Then why is he / was he overweight? He is allegedly the highest earner at the club yet is the 4th Choice centre back. Not what most would describe as an ultimate professional. Secondly, the kids at school issue. I used to take the mick out of a deaf kid at school. I'm not proud of it & I'm sorry its happened but that's what kids do. If it wasn't Guy's kiddies it would have been someone else's for being too tall, short, fat, thin. I'm not saying its right but that's the way kids are and it teaches you to stand up for yourself in later life. In any case if he had been fit, the story would never had become an issue, regardless of the rights and wrongs. Thirdly the hiding behind you computer comments, I think we all agree if we are going to give the players stick then NSC is the forum where this should take place & not out on the pitch, where I for one will shout my throat dry in support of the team.

As for Butters he had an average game against poor opposition yesterday. His height is useful in a small back four, he is good to have at set pieces but will be torn apart by players with pace. Pethick was doing all the running yesterday. As always the truth lies somewhere between 'He's a lazy good for nothing on over £100K a year' & 'He is the answer to our defensive prayers this season'

The corner quietly rusting
Just for the record as someone who was and still is very critical of this action.

Have no prblem with anyone slagging any one off, its a part of life.

The problem i had was the placement of it on an auction site, not something to do to any human being, harks back to slavery and all that.

By all means set-up a web site have a pop all you like but to do that was, in my view, wrong.

Compared to the abuse that players, managers and officials get in fanzines or radio phone ins (excluding SCR where they discuss how well ironed the players shirts are) the Butters auction was merely a bit of an in joke which was picked up by The Sun, and so the players got hold of it and developed a siege mentality.

Butters is paid to be a professional athlete, and as such has a responsibility to look after his body. He patently has failed to do this and the consequence was that he did not make a first team appearance under SC for most of last season.

In the wider scheme of things this is a storm in a teacup (followed by double bacon and cheeseburger, two portions of KFC and a danish)
