Burglar who will burgle no longer

If that's true, and it's quite possible, don't forget that there is a much higher likelyhood that the home owner will have a gun. Might put some potential burglars off to begin with.
I agree, and I'm not 100% certain it is true, but if burglars here knew that in all likelihood they'd get stabbed if caught in a household perhaps the rates would fall here, the handwringers on here will disagree, but i bet they would.

We should be allowed to keep pet Tigers! It would deter burglars and help conserve an endangered species!

I don't think it would conserve the house-owners for very longer. My cats are bad enough waking me up putting a soft paw on my cheek - I don't want my face ripped off by a half-ton lioness of a morning.

Just let it in the house at night or when you're away. Lock your bedroom door ...

One issue for me was where did s/he get the knive from? Did s/he retrieve it from the kitchen, have it next to the bed?

Presumably s/he passed the burglars (carrying, at the very least, what they used to break in with) on the stairs and said "Excuse me chaps, I'm just off to the kitchen to get a knife to defend myself. Have a rummage around, I won't be two ticks"

Two key things in that report, potentially... Firstly, the statement said the burglar received stab 'wounds' (plural). Secondly, the new policy involves the use of 'reasonable' force.

I have no knowledge of this case, obviously, but in a trial the defence would have to demonstrate that stabbing someone multiple times is 'reasonable'. In my opinion it's a dangerous precedent to say that if someone breaks into your house it's okay to stab them repeatedly.

OK, but what about shooting them once (with a shotgun)?

Sounds to me like there's more to this story than meets the eye... 4 burglars working together, all in balaclavas? Knife just happens to be handy & then multiple stab wounds...?

The possibilities for the exact circumstances here are endless, but for an overview of the situation/laws on the matter, I'd say that we have it about right - the use of 'reasonable' force being appropriate. Carte blanche to kill someone because they are in your house is not a great idea - if you were so inclined, you could snatch someone off the street, bundle them back to your house & murder them before pleading your right to defend your home by any means necessary... However, I'd say as long as there's no permanent and/or severe damage, one should have the right to dish out a right good beating to any idiot breaking into your house

my reading of it, thres a possibility the stabing was an accident of some sort. i'd expect a gang of 4 with a man down to become a tad violent before leaving for the hospital. maybe one fell on there own knife or one of the other ganag members?

The PC brigade can go screw themselves on this one. If someone wants to try and rob you in your own home, they deserve all they get. End of story.

Assuming it's as straightforward as it seems, if he hadn't have tried to burgle someone, he wouldn't be dead.

I think there's a moral in there.

In English Law, you are only allowed to kill someone in self defence and no more than reasonable force in that self defence.

Death penalty for all burglars, summarily delivered by homeowners. Okay...

its easy when thinking straight in the cold light of day. However how easy is it to think of all options when scared out of your mind, caught by surprise and in middle of the night!!!
